So a while back I picked up an HW98 from someone who had picked it up off someone else and hadn't shot it much. I thought it was shooting underpowered, and sure enough today I tested it on a chrony and got an average of 590fps with JSB Exact 8.44gr.

So... I'm now looking for a tune kit or spring upgrade or something.

Who's my best option, and what should I be ordering? Vortek has the PG2 kit in 18 or 12 ft-lbs. Would the 18 ft-lb one be too much? If accurate that'd be 980 fps for a JSB Exact which seems a bit much. Presumably it's not quite that potent? If necessary I suppose I could tweak it down slightly.

Are there other options I should look at?

Ultimately this will still be a fun gun rather than a competition gun, but I'd like to keep good accuracy.

Vortek makes an appropriate tune kit. For a smooth shot cycle and minimum recoil, the 12 fpe kit is desirable. At 12 fpe an 8.4 grain pellet has a muzzle velocity around 800 fps. The High Output kit's 18 fpe refers no doubt to the energy that it would have in a .22 calibre rifle. From the factory the HW98/95 in .177 gives about 14 - 15 fpe.

also look into the Maccari tune kit....

If your wanting a softer/easier cocking cycle. Go for the Macarri. If you want an extra 1 to 2 fpe stick with the Vortex.

So I've been looking around a bit and it appears that for the Vortek or Macarri I'd have to order it from the USA since nobody in Canada seems to stock either kit for this particular rifle.

For about a third the cost of either kit I could just order a new OEM spring, piston seal, and mainspring guide from SSSO. I was toying with the idea of cutting down the mainspring guide to make a tophat rather than trying to source Delrin to machine one myself--is this a crazy idea?

Does anyone know how much better the full kits would be compared to just tuning/tweaking/polishing the OEM components?

The HW98 is a terrific air rifle right out of the box. The majority of shooters use them with their original factory springs and seals. For a third of the price it's a very good bet.
