I'm suspecting one of my sub 500fps rifles is shooting a bit hot, but do not have a chronograph (yet) to test it.

So, I can say with certainty that out of any of my PAL .22's they will expand in a medium like water, and sub 500fps they do not. I would say they come out at 750\850 fps (advertised 950 with alloy no doubt) in the PAL's.

I now have one that "semi" expands them, so I am pretty confident it is over 500fps. That means I have to trigger lock it, etc etc etc.

My question is, does anyone know at what velocity they start to expand? 600fps? 700fps? Just want a guesstimate of where this particular rifle is at the moment.

I'm looking at chronographs now, don't want cheap but also don't want 100 features I'll never use.

It is impossible to judge the MV of an air rifle based on how much a pellet "semi" expands. At the same time it is hard to say what the MV of an air rifle is with a given pellet based on what a manufacturer might advertise. But you are no doubt right that it will be less with lead pellets than advertised.

This is true. Could been a softer cast of lead, or expansion hole was drilled deeper. Only true way is chrony it.
