I heard a good joke about what is the best gun to use in case of a bear attack. A .25 acp, a guy and his wife were out on a hike and they came upon a mother bear and 2 cubs. The mom bear took off after them right away. The wife carried her .25 and with fast thinking she shot her husband in the knee, she was able to make it to the car and to safety.

On the serious side, a 12 bore loaded with full sized 1 1/8ounce flat or squarish nosed slugs is the best defense against bears. The round nosed and hollow point FOSTER slugs are second best. Buckshot is arguably better only if the bear is two legged - but slugs will still work a treat!
