Newbie here: I am considering buying a sub500 fps airgun (the ruger air hawk), and I would like to shoot it in my backyard/inside my home in Vancouver. Is it legal to shoot it as it does not qualify as a firearm (under 500fps) under what research I have done. I did find some threads on this forum from years ago and they had mixed answers (not to mention that they are quite outdated)

Generally speaking - shooting in any sort of public place (where others can see you) is not recommended.

Out of sight is out of mind...

(In other words - in your basement is much the safer option).

As a teen we used to walk down the street with our .22's to shoot at the outskirts of town but in today's climate I don't even like to carry an umbrella. I recommend you be pretty discreet. It does not take much to alarm people these day's even if it's legal. A bunch of nervous policeman pointing guns at you is not at great place to be. I shoot inside quite a bit in the winter. On a positive note welcome to a great hobby!

Suggestion - are there any gun clubs with indoor ranges in or around Toronto? We use our local club's indoor range or air rifle and air handgun shooting during the cold months.

Barring that, a good backstop in the basement is the place for shooting, not a backyard in a city. You do NOT want an ERT showing up at your house, guns drawn.

Sub 500fps air guns are non-firearms only for licensing - otherwise they are considered firearms & discharge within a municipality may be illegal - is in most towns, villages and cities, these days.

You can check with your local law enforcement.

As of 2014 any pellet gun (including those below 500fps) are now classed as weapons and are subject to the same rules as powderburners...including proper transportation and storage.

If you shoot in you backyard, especially if it is a big property you might get a responding police officer who will let you off...you also stand the chance of tactical showing up weapons drawn...in which case it could get ugly fast.
I have a nice basement range...even so none of my neighbors know it exists.

First they came for the Socialists, and I did not speak out—
Because I was not a Socialist.

Then they came for me—and there was no one left to speak for me.

Unfortunately, that horse left the gate a looong time ago.

As sad as it is, you are getting good advice. I carry my replica's in a laptop bag, real stuff in a Plano toolbox.

Rifles in a case, inside a cardboard box from Walmart.

If you are lucky enough to live in a rural area, Joe Farmer has grown up around guns and unless you are being an irresponsible moron, probably wouldn't give you a second glance.

If you have a basement, use it. Backyard is probably against some town bylaw and even if not, if YOU are out there shooting and a neighbor gets stung by a bee, they are going to take a good look at you.

SRY - Vancouver, not To. I don't know why I thought I had read Toronto in your question.

City bylaws in Vancouver prohibit use of any projectile launching device within city limits. The specifics items mentioned include airguns and slingshots and any sort of archery. I think we might be allowed to throw rocks and Frisbees but could be mistaken there. Anyway, short answer is no. Period. So don't draw attention to your yard by shooting there or trouble will come to you. Same sort of bylaws apply in New Westminster, North Vancouver, Burnaby, Richmond...

Are there no archery clubs in Vancouver, New West, Burnaby? Such a big city & no archery clubs? What about the gun clubs in Burnaby along the channel towards Port Moody?
We used to hunt ducks in South Richmond.

Sorry, overstepped a bit with Richmond. Much of Richmond forbids discharging firearms and airguns, but if course with a permission from a farmer out of the city proper it is okay to hunt pest species, and I think there may be a small area where game bird hunting is allowed. In Vancouver there is only the police tactical training centre, down below VCC beside the Skytrain and freight tracks. Police can shoot there. That's it for Vancouver. Archery... well, there used to be a club meeting at Point Grey community centre, actually at the small theatre building near it. Fencing there too, which I used to do. At that time (early 1990's) I heard there was also an airgun club meeting there one night per week, but that's long gone. The airgun range at Richmond Sportstown is gone, along with the whole network of buildings for other sports there, as they're developing condos. The rod and gun club has land and funding to build a proper light firearm and airgun indoor range, but the city of Richmond has been stalling for many years and doesn't seem likely to ever issue a permit. The 'Vancouver Gun Range' or whatever they call themselves is in Coquitlam. A friend (Barfman) visited and says it was fun, but pricey. Further out there's the Mission range.

Wasn't the ruling in 2014 successfully appealed...?

Oups hit the send to fast. I am Joe farmer and I feel like I have to wait for no cars going by or people around when leaving the house to hunt grouse in the back fields, and I live an hour from the nearest city. The shooting sports need good ambasadors as we have a PR problem
