I've got an itch for something I haven't been able to find in a pistol. Tried the modified 2240 ,but doesn't work in cold weather. Have a Zoraki HP1 , pain to pump while hunting ( enter the Elmer Fudd ,be very ,very quiet) and had a 177 BSA scorpion , which I would have kept if it was a reliable shooter in .22 cal . I've posted adds in the wanted for a Diana LP8 and for an HW45 . This pistol would be for back up at very close range 10 yards max . Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I have had the same itch. I'm looking for a Diana P5 pistol but they are hard to come by.
No one wants to sell the pistols we are looking for Right now.
Do you know what a used hw45 is worth ? Just wondering.

About the least I've seen an HW45 used was about $350 (US). The Diana LP8 is easier to shoot accurately than the HW45. Both have dovetails for a scope/red dot. Both are excellent pistols, made well, all metal. The HW45 has the better trigger. Never saw the Diana in .22. Happy hunting, RC

I've taken grouse and rabbits with both .177 and.22 13-XX's. At ten yards and under, the grouse necks part just as easily with either caliber... come to think of it, I'm about even Steven for both calibers. In pistol form, the cheap Tasco bkrd-30-rf is my go to sight- an inexpensive red dot.
It is easy to silent pump these guns by using the trigger guard for a palm stop while pumping. (Thx vagrant)
Personally would like to find some decent hi-viz sights for these instead of the red dot, but that's just me...

Hunting small game and upland game birds with an air pistol (<500fps variety) is permitted in Alberta.

I'm sure he checked the regs before beginning the quest...

22xx based pcp solves the low temp issues....

Perfectly legal in Ontario with a sub 500 fps pistol as long as you have a valid small game license, and the species is in season.

When I lived in South Western Ontario as a kid, I kept forgetting those last two points, but I had fun.

You'd probably not get away with that today.

The areas I hunt in are fairly remote , not to mention the woods are so thick you can barely see your feet let alone an MNR officer. I wouldn't chance loosing my guns over a small piece of meat in the freezer .

i wouldn't be concerned about the caliber as much as the accuracy and the
ease of cocking. Most .177s shoot closer to 500fps which makes them more
accurate right out of the gate and better suited to head shots which is what you need when hunting anything larger than a sparrow. So the HW or even the Beeman P17 I think if your on a tight budget.

Took the plunge and bought a used HW45 in .22 cal . Now for the long wait for it to get here .

An excellent choice!
Now practice, practice, practice... I know mine very well at 21 ft down the garage - one inch groups. I recently found it is just on the upwards part of the trajectory though, so you need to learn your ranges.
Mine likes Hobbys, you might want a heavier domed pellet but for hunting your first priority is accuracy so maybe give Hobbys a try too.
