Quite nice looking with that scope, pretty well balanced IMHO :)

Could there be some lateral play in the barrel?

It's possible. The stock screws are in with blue loctite, the barrel hinge is tightened up pretty snug. Enough that the barrel stays where you put it.

Scope is brand new and shouldn't be failing just yet....

Been reading a few good reviews and more than one says it wants a snug shoulder hold.

I'll try the laser today if I can. After sighting in the rifle yesterday I moved the dot on to the cross hairs, so it should be close.

Thanks, I like the looks of it with that model scope way more than a " normal" tube.
