The flatter trajectory argument comes from the UK, where they have a 12 ftlb limit instead of a velocity limit. 12ftlb in 177 will be a flatter trajectory than 12 ftlb in 22. For us with non pal it's the opposite, as mentioned already. 22 will have flatter trajectory than 177 and retain more hitting power at the target. Anyway just rehashing the same info, lol, I guess I like to see myself type or something =)

But I shot my 953 and 1322 with scope sighted at about 8 meters on targets about 20 meters away, I don't need to adjust my 953 but need to aim higher or lower when using the 1322 ( don't remember... But looks when I shooting my 1322 I need to keep fine tuning about the aiming and usually the first shot would miss... And the 22 pellet looks more easily to be affected by distance, wind, etc...)

But I just noticed this recently as I didn't shoot that far before I having my 953... and still building up my experience on this...

Using the 953 to shoot things ( pop cans, bottles, bottles caps etc) out to 40, 50 yards is interesting ~ although there is not hitting power at all when the pellet arrives the target, but able to hit something this far is fun!

If they have the same velocity then there is no question the 22 will fly flatter and have more energy down range.look on chairgun and you'll see the drop will be less for the 22 at longer range. Perhaps your 1322 needs some love and tlc!

Ballistic co-efficient differences (drag) will have the .22 plowing into the ground well before the .177.
In nearly the same velocity guns I have, the .22 drops below any reasonable elevation correction at 60 yds, while the .177 is still hitting the target at 75 yds with about 8" of elevation correction. 18.1 JSB heavy in .22 @ 760 fps, 10.5 gr Crosman ultra-mag in .177 at 780 fps. Incidentally, those 75 yd groups are nothing to write home about- serious dispersion there

I actually went out and did the range shooting.

As always, your mileage may vary...

That's very interesting! According to chairgun the 18gr has a higher BC and should drop a 1/4" less even going 20fps slower. I used Crosman premier heavy for the 177 so this could have a slightly different BC than what you used but the same weight anyway. Real world tests trump math though, so that makes an interesting anomaly.

Yeah... I agreed more actual real rests need to do ~

For my guns, maybe the multi pump 1322 doesn't has same stable fps shot by shot, so in longer distance this also a pretty important element affecting the accurate... Anyway, SSP should have better stable output than the multi pumps ~

JSB domed pellets from my 953 will drop about 1 inch something at 40yard. It's very consistent, so I just need to aim a bit higher and will get my target hit ~

Maybe I should put the scope on my 2240 to do some test ( if have time), I believe the CO2 powered 2240 will have more consistent output than the 1322...

And from chairgun, I also learned something interesting ~

It looks the velocity deal a better part in energy than the weight...

And adding up the smaller size of the 177 pellets give it better penetration... Looks 177 will be better in the fields for small games too?!

Of course, if you need .25 / .30 /.50... That's another story....

In a hunting situation, I seem to be able to place my shots a bit tighter in .177 than .22, but that may be delving more into opinion...
I've hunted with both and have come to the conclusion that both calibers are equally efficient if they are used reasonably with-in their limitations. The .22 seems to do a bit better in the willow cover I most often find grouse in.

I try to keep ranges as short as possible for hunting- regardless of what I'm using. I've found that a stacked single hole group at 12 M turns into 1/2"-3/4" on centers at 20 yds, and those groups expand the further out I try. Considering that the two major k/z's on a grouse are about 3/4", I try to keep a max of 25 yds....

Good points. And with a 500fps I'd keep it to 10 or 15 yards for grouse, or less!

If using a scope, remember the off set distance between the scope and the barrel.... Once I missed a pop can 2 yards away for this reason ~ lol

For Me living in Canada and never going to acquire an RPAL,
Why not have a .22 @495 as opposed to a .177 @495?

Took the easier way out of this conundrum and went with both.

Yeah ~ we can make a topic to list the potential reason for the next gun so that we can convince ourselves to skip the lunch and save the money ~ [emoji2]
