I prefer to use a pump. I don't shoot my ariguns too often so the costs involved with my 3000psi SCUBA have left it in my closet. I had to get a Hydro test done, not a big deal, but due every 5 years I believe. Then the SCUBA shop won't fill it unless the do a visual check, due annually. The costs aren't expensive. but for the amount I shoot these days, the pump seems to be the best bet.

As mentioned, a 3000psi tank only give one full charge, after that you need a pump to top it off. A 4500psi would be the solution, but I think they have an expiry date on the tanks, don't quote me on that. Also the place I took my tank for Hydro can't test up to 4500psi, so the cost would be higher for that, too.

I'm waiting to hear more about the Chinese Compressors. For the price they seem like a good deal if they hold up. Until then, my Hill pump is a great workout. To top up from 2000psi to 3000psi or 1000 to 2000 isn't so bad, I'm panting and my arms feel it, but that's not so bad.

Back to my SCUBA. I was in the shower one morning when I heard a loud noise. Sounded like a high pressure water leak, I jumped out of the shower and checked the areas where I know the plumbing risers are, couldn't find anything. Turned out the burst disc on my full tank let go. So my full tank, that I just paid for a Hydro, Visual, and fill now sits empty (after only 2 fills), waiting for more money to sink into it. Again, not a huge cost, but the hassle involved is a bit much.

Woody - revel in your ability to still use a pump. Many of us are not capable any more, backs, arms, legs - all "going South".

The 45 min scba tank I bought had fresh hydro and rebuilt valve with 2 years left of the 15 year life span. I paid around $175 shipped to NB. Filling my two pcp' s from around 2000 to 3000 psi I get close to 50 fills( used one of the online fill calculators) which is plenty for a month or two of shooting and pesting at a few permissions I have. Recertification of scba tanks is in the works so I read online. May look into Nitrogen set or another tank since they're pretty cheap for amount of shooting you can do over a couple years. The place I bought my tank from had other tanks with longer life and also 60 min tanks which would give even more fills.

I was thinking about that inert gas, but where??? dive shops?

And will most airguns be able to fill/function using nitrogen?

Somewhere along the line I read since the molecules are smaller, you get more bang for the buck?

Air is around 80% Nitrogen, you'll be hard pressed to see a difference between the two in terms of performance.



You might be thinking of Helium...

Helium .. thats it... Might be interesting to try it! (No doubt its expensive! )

As for the 80% Nitrogen .. used for filling special tires? Is there any advantage for airguns? cost?
