Good day! I have watched a few Youtubes of a couple different rifles I am interested in. One thing I have a bit of a problem but may be just me. Over and over Ive seen people shooting with a rest out front but also a big sand bag for the stock to rest on. These videos are showing accuracy which is very excellent. Do they shoot like this during competitions? Rest out front and a bag out back, to me kinda takes a huge human factor out of shooting. The last guy just kept pumping round after round into nearly the same hole. Maybe i'm just old fashioned but keeping the human factor into the equation in my humble opinion would be a very competitive sport. Then again, just my opinion.

all due respect to extreme benchrest but the best shooting competitions are the ones done without a rest at all.

Competition is to challenge ppl and the bench + sand bag is to challenge the equipment ( or how deep the money in your pocket )... That's the difference ~ lol

One of the main reasons for using rests is for sighting in a new gun ,new scope or new pellet to determine accuracy in short or long distances.

Our black powder "Trail Walk" is totally shooting offhand. That form, offhand and standing, is where shooting skill for hunting, is developed.

If you want to shoot benchrest, especially extreme air rifle bench-rest, you will need as much or more

practice than we do to be competitive. It is a tough sport.

CF benchrest is even more demanding, in equipment and loading practises and equipment - 1/4" 5-shot groups at 100 yards will not get you into

the top 10 at many events,

Back in the 70's you could win matches with a consistent 1/4 moa rifle. Today, good BR 'stool' shooters often

make tighter than 1/4", on centres for 5 shot groups, at 200yards.

It's not a vice,though it looks like one,there is a soft bag in the middle of the front rest supporting the rifles forend.
"Bart used a Farley Coaxial front rest with soft leather Edgewood front bag sprinkled with baby powder".
The gun "free recoils"
Because the boreline and the stock are parallel, the gun recoils straight back.
The stock also has a "keel" that rides in both the front and rear bags.(keeping it straight on recoil)
If the gun were in a vice, it would be "fixed" and would violate benchrest rules.

There is no vice - that is an adjustable front rest, that is all.

That is normal bench rest shooting and NO it is not easy as easy as it seems to appear to you.

Were you to sit down with that very rifle at a bench, with 0 lessons, you might be

able to put 5 into an inch at 100yards. You might also shoot a 3 inch group.

Yes - they are designed to be fairly sung, but the gun must be free recoiling, sliding to the rear EXACTLY the same each shot.

A wide flat forend is essential & it must fit the sand bag properly for this level of accuracy. It is quite a game in itself, certainly

not for everyone! Dedication to that particular sport is necessary - along with a LOT of $$ to spend. The two harmonics adjusters

on that barrel & it's shroud are rather ominous looking. A local chap here makes an adjustable front rest that actually moves with a lever to

align the rifle with each bullseye for .22RF BR/50 event. Thus, the front rest moves the gun to help align the sights with each of the 50 bullseyes

on the target, one shot each. This is an aide, but does not aim the rifle. Because it is a timed event, it is MOST difficult to shoot a perfect score.

The rest just cuts a bit of time. Any off centre- line pressure will throw the shot out to the outer rings - it is a difficult match.

If I remember correctly, the "X" is a dot & the 10 ring is 1/10" wide.
