Has anyone here converted an Optimus...Phantom..etc. from spring to gas ram? Is there machining to do or just drop in the different parts behind the ram?I have a spare Nitro Piston and I may as well use it....

Just need to get the strut centering cup and remove the spring guide tube from the end cap.

Amazing....for once Gravel Agency has all the parts I need then....I thought there was machining to do but it'll be nice if its just a drop in for a Phantom....bent another spring so to hell with them....I've been shooting my Nitro Venom for 7 years now and only replaced the ram once.

I put one in my banjamin. If it’s the same. Installed the ram backwards, pull the spring guide tube out of the end cap and the end of the gas piston rests against the retaining pin. That was one of the easy mods.

I had a fairly detailed conversation with Chevota regarding the gas pistons. He doesn't seem like a huge fan. He says they have their downfalls. The potential for leaking mostly. His suggestion was to certainly not dispose of the spring you removed. I certainly didn't throw it away. Stowed it in a safe place.

Well he's a master tuner don't forget....I have an Optimus and Phantom springer I used mostly for testing seals...but since I found out what I wanted to know about seals.…I will convert the two springers to rams.. much thanks to you and leadslinger but I see the Crosman compression tubes are slightly different between spring guns and ram guns. There is a measurement difference between the end of the tubes to the centre of the locking pin.....I'd better do some more research.….

Research schresearch. Get in there and see if she fits. That's how I love to build. Take it apart and ask questions later! Lol.

Yes, Chevotas knowledge is incredible.

MyCros; I thought you already did this?
Anyway, that measure diff is .100", or maybe it's 2.5mm, I dunno. Either way the hole for the cross pin that holds it all together is .1" fwd compared to the coil version. I assume it was to prevent peep w/ coil guns from converting to gas which would hurt gun sales.
Where there's a will there's way: The fix is easy imo, you simply don't use all the other nitro parts, just the gas spring itself. Here's the pix I made while converting a gun, hope it makes sense:

Done...Phantom rammed :D ...I've been shooting my spring guns so much I forgot how nice and smooth the rams are....bit of a hassle compressing that strut to install with the new setup but it was worth it....picked up 40 fps over the spring too...and I hope I'm not jinxing myself but my gas ram was made August 2012....its the original out of the Venom that I thought was leaking but it was good after all so I kept it...glad I did....
