Hey - I am thinking of getting one of the older small Slavia rifles for my 10 year old and wondering what one would be best to keep an eye out for (or put out a wanted ad). I have a 622 that needs a fair bit of work, but I think it is a great size (and cocking effort) for the little guy as a backyard plinker. Was looking at the Daina 24, but it is just too big for him at this stage.

I am thinking that a .177 would be better than .22 as it would have a bit more pop than my 622. I would also like something with as much oomph as these rifles are capable of so that he won't feel like he has outgrown it in a year or two.

I know there are a few different models of these older, small Slavia rifles, so figured I would get some advice.

Cheers

The Diana Eleven 495 fps may be a good choice. It is shorter, lighter and you can upgrade it with the full power mainspring later to achieve about 560 fps: https://www.airgunsource.ca/en/eleven-177-cal-495-fps.html

Same for the Diana 240 Classic, a bit bigger and heavier, but with a nice wood stock and the ajustable T05 trigger.

There is also the Diana 24C for sale at Wanstalls Online at only $129.99. Their website is up again:

I was looking at the Diana 24C at Wanstalls but we already have a D24 (great little rifle I bought off Dr Nick a couple of years ago - thanks) and it is quite a bit too big for him at this point. My little Slavia 622 is quite small and seems like a perfectly scaled down air rifle for a kid. That is why I am looking at something like that - and if he outgrows it and decides he wants something with more heft and power, we will still have a nice little classic airgun in the family :)

There's the Slavia 618 and 624 (the 624 is a 618 with a longer barrel), that are truly ''youth'' rifles at about 4 lbs, and the 620, a bit bigger and heavier, more like a ''teenage'' rifle. Sometimes you can see one of those advertised here in the ''for sale'' section. You could also keep an eye opened for a Diana 25, which is almost the same exact rifle as the 618. Keep in mind that the 618/624 and Diana 25 are 400 fps rifles, , and that there's not much room for improvement. With the 620, it gets better, I've seen one getting in the low 700's.

All these fine ladies have decent accuracy, and with the low cocking effort your kid will enjoy hours of fun :)

The Slavia 624 is about 38.5" and 3.8 lbs

The Slavia 620 is about 42.9" and 5,9 lbs

The Diana 24 is about 42.1" and 6.0 lbs

The Diana 24C is about 38" and 5 lbs

The Diana Eleven is about 39" and 5.7 lbs

The Diana 240 Classic is about 40" and 5.7 lbs

And there is a Slavia 624 right now on Kijiji/BC for $125:

Thanks, I had seen that one on kijiji, but $125 plus shipping is more than I want to spend at this point.

As for your numbers, I am bit puzzled. I have a 622, which by most accounts is the same size as a 618, but it is waaaaay smaller than the D24 we got for my wife. I get that the D24 is bigger than the D24C, and that the 622/618 is smaller than the 624 (longer barrel), but they don't seem to be even close to the same category of gun. My 622 is definitely a child's gun, whereas the D24 is a bit on the small side but is otherwise a normal air rifle. But looking at your numbers, it looks like the 624 isn't that far off the D24C.

Yeah, it is similar to the 622 I have, which does seem like a perfect size. My only hesitation is the lower fps that he may feel like he "outgrows" a bit too quickly. But I will keep an eye out and see if anything comes up.

Nice little rifle you have there, by the way. My 622 needs work.

I have a few 618, it's one of my favorite plinkers. You can shoot it all day long, not a single can will be safe in the yard.
It's small enough for a kid but it's also ACCURATE which few "youth" rifles can say (yes I'm looking at you RedRyders), they're so smooth to shoot.

Most of them need at least a reseal, some need more love than others. If you can do the fixing I'll pay shipping to you, you fix them, you ship one or two back and you keep the others and spare parts. I have some in .177 and some in .22 if I'm not mistaken. I have 3 or 5 of them plus spare parts.
I think I also have a 624 that could be thrown in the deal.

You can’t buy a single airgun for everything. Golfers use many different clubs, airgunners need more than one gun

I am probably not the guy to do any repairs - I am not that handy (that is why I have a 622 and an Alecto that both need work). I do appreciate the offer though.

The Diana Models 70 and 72 are tough to find, but hard to beat for youth. They are basically the pistol actions with longer barrels and a youth rifle stock. The 70 recoils and the 72 is recoiless and not only hard to find but expensive as well. They are based on the model 5 and 6 pistols. The. velocities low but great to learn on. When they are outgrown, they will sell very quickly.

I am always on the lookout for a 72, but have not had a good opportunity to get one yet.

I picked up a 618 at a gun show about one year ago for $30 in almost new shape. It is surprisingly accurate for a low priced airgun.
