15-20 minute, sometime even half hour drives here are par for the course, when we need to go into the city.

There is a Walmart 12 minutes away which has an LCBO, Bulk Barn, and a Dollarama on the same plaza though.

That must suck.

Seems my family found the sweat spot then. Far enough out of the way for it to be legal to discharge firearms, multiple acres of land, peaceful, natural, tractors drive on the roads here, so do ATV's, combines, etc and sometimes even horses, but still not too far from the city, so it isn't a major pain either. :drinkers:

There's also an outdoor rifle and shotgun range on the road just above me, which I go to from time to time, we can hear when people are there, and my folks can hear when I am there.

No 150KM drives here just for shopping.

I moved here to get away from the city.. Its far enough away, you don't get the yahoos of city people or the highschool teens. But we still got some stores in town. That not too far away to effect every day normal lives. So if need milk or bread.

Its just if I want certain things. I normally have to goto the city. I go once a month for appointments so normally pick up stuff there. Normally don't make just because trips. Just don't expect to buy a big screen TV in Middleton, Or set of Etnies sneakers.

I got 3 ranges within 50km, with the nearest 10mins away. Not including the back yard. If I want to shoot indoors, got one 50km away ( 24/7 access ) For gun stores we got one about 40mins away, and other then Canadian Tire in Greenwood. In the city. So I reload my own, or wait till I need to goto the city to stock up.

Honestly it's not really that bad.

7 minutes drive East from home in the truck for the start of moose, elk, deer, bear, wolf and coyote hunting.
14 minutes West for the range to 200 meters and indoor shooting, air rifle, small bore sil., 3 handgun disciplines, cowboy action, black powder trail, sporting clays and trap.
40 minutes West for the range to our 1,400 meter range & 8 ipsc bays & black powder range not completed.

Any hidden taxes in fuel?
Last August, I paid a paltry $1.20 per liter for diesel in Nova Scotia.
In Northern Ontario, it was $1.45 per liter.
In the USA where they are complaining about fuel costs, in Sept, I paid from a low of $0.69 per liter, up to $0.92 per liter after 30% exchange included.
That was from Virginia to Washington State. My 2-month trip used 4,200 liters of Diesel, 19,200 kilometers. While in the States, much of
it was at 70mph - pulling a 27' trailer, just to keep up with "some" of the traffic in 80mph speed limits on the interstates.
Climbing the 'Continental Divide' up to 12,000ft. ASL at 70mph uses fuel.
Overall mileage worked out to around 12.8mpg. I was happy with that.
Glad that is off the bucket list.

Agree. Taxes aren't that good. Thankfully the variety of options is big enough to choose from. The same goes for other fields. For instance, when I was renovating my house it was a hard time to choose a company to deal with because of my desire to save. I bumped into this one http://sidinginvancouver.com/hardie-siding.html which covered my garage with siding and it was pretty affordable in comparison with others. But I had to spend a lot of time to find out the best option.

If you added up ALL the taxes we pay, I think the number is closer to 65% of your total income, goes in one form or another.
15 years ago, I recall the number was 58%. Every socialist government - ANYWHERE, seem to have a committee which does
nothing but figure out new forms of taxes to be levied.
Talk going on now by the NDP in BC trying to figure out how they can tax you on the amount of rain your house prevents from
reaching the ground by being diverted to the storm sewers. The talk is a tax on the roof area, not just the interior square footage.
They got the idea from the Liberal government we had last time.

There ya go. We have a huge rain barrel that collects rain water from the front scuppers. When the barrel is full, the overflow goes into the front lawn,
otherwide it is used in the flower bed and side bed peas, beans and tomatoes. The side scuppers send water to the lawn.

I guess aquifers and ground water is different. Just wait, though. I am sure THEY are working on that too.

Unfortunately:

and yes, they use roof area.
