Anyone ever tried using .177 darts in a .177 airgun? Or are they a waste of time?

Anyone know what purpose they were made for?

I suspect continued use would ruin the rifling in a rifled barrel. Would they work in a shell loading revolver, or other smooth bore air guns?

Yes and yes. They have terrible accuracy at any distance over 5-10'.
They may have originally come out to offer a "dart tournament" style of shooting on a dartboard of sorts. Can't see them ever being used for any type of hunting, even in powerful guns.
While they will no doubt ruin rifling (especially in some of the older brass barrels like Sheridan offered), they may scratch non-rifled steel barrels with continued use.
The ones I have seem to be made of zinc-coated steel, with poorly attached feathering (the sort of stuff you might see on a fishing lure). Not very smooth on the zinc coating, either.
All in all, I wouldn't recommend them.
Probably the ONLY upside I can think of is that they can be reused...

BTW, wheeliehd, that pistol is a bit to rich for me. But am interested to see how it worked for you.

I can remember trying them 30-35yrs ago in my Slavia 630. Novelty quickly wore off after 1/2 dozen shots, couldn't hit anything. Back to regular pellets.

Seems to me, when I was a kid, I bought a package of them with paper route money. I thought they'd be the cat's meow on squirrels. Couldn't hit a darn
thing with them and of course, went back to pellets, just like Cwild. This was about 1958 or 59. In 1962, age 12, my uncle gave me a .22 Ace Single shot for my birthday.
That was the end of air gun shooting until about 1979 - bought a 1322, lost interest quickly, switched to a .30M1 Carb., then .38SPL then .44 Mag. for packing around on midnight "prowl" shift.

Bingo. Here is an article about Mozart and his upper class friends having competitions on Sundays. It shows some of the targets too.

I bought one of these many moons ago, and came with BBs and darts. I used to shoot at the dart board and hit everything I didn't want.

i was given one at a garage sale last fall as the lady didn't know how to work it and just thought it was broken... :)

now i want darts!

I use the darts in an old Crosman 760 Pumpmaster.
We have a corkboard and shoot balloons for fun.

I got a package of darts. Nothing that I'd want to shoot them from.
