I'll check but I think it also was a Chaser transfer port. I wish I would have tried the lr700w spring as well to see if it made any difference. I know with the small transfer port the big heavy spring was somehow giving a lower velocity than a lighter spring, and I'm not really certain why. I have experienced the same thing with my Chief, maxing the hammer spring adjustment slowed it down and gave less velocity but a lot more hammer bounce. I can understand the hammer bounce but I am curious what exactly makes the velocity slower. I wonder if it opens and closes the valve too quick and then opens it again on the bounce too late to help increase the velocity or something like that?

I think you may be right about a faster hammer having a faster ,shorter air passage stroke.

I'm on the phone right now and have one heckuva head cold.

I did notice through my pottering around that some of these bbls have ovoid cut air inlets. Likely chatter during the manufacture process.

At any rate, I'll have a bit of size checking to do next week.

The port I drilled out on the 22 is the same diameter as the valve air outlet....

Ok. Sorry to hear of your cold, no fun. Fast recovery to you!
I'll measure the transfer port in the morning or try. Found my calipers!

Wes

Hope I'm not too late in asking this- how does the PP-800 spring compare to the 700-W hammer spring?

I thought about the cracking reports I was getting on the first rifle with the .177 bbl aboard, and that could well have been hammer bounce.
Interestingly enough, that started in the low 620's or so, but had never occurred with the .22 bbl...

Ok! yeah sounds like it could be the bounce.
The PP800 spring is a little shorter I think and is more tightly wound than the lr700w, and is a little lighter wire. I'll have to see if I can measure one for you once morning arrives.
Thanks,
Wes

The transfer port is 3.58mm. The PP800 spring is actually longer than the lr700w but lighter and tighter wound at 9.36cm and 25 windings. The LR700W is 9.1cm

This bears some investigation.

Am tempted to trim some off the 700-W spring, but am a bit leery of going too far. Think I'll wait until I've got the equivalent of a tin of pellets through the gun before deciding...

Good idea, see how it settles in.

I made a mistake! The Rebel spring is shorter than the LR700W spring. I was measuring the wrong spring, a PR900W spring. They seem to be the same strength and coil but the pp800 is shorter. My bad

Finally got a bit of time to work on ports.

The factory Chaser's flow hole through the port mikes .1406"

The port I drilled out for the .22 Artemis pumper is .1364"- which is the same as the exhaust hole on the valve.
It sort of explains the performance difference between the two Artemis pumpers.
I'm going to have to do a check of exhaust hole diameters...

That .042" port that came out of the latest rifle, (and into the Chaser) is too small for CO-2.
Pellets lodge in the bore with that much restriction, so I bored it out to the diameter of the original Chaser port.

Going to try and do some more shooting this week.
Will eventually have to come to a decision on a scope for the new .177 pumper.... the Big Banner is an awful lot of scope for what will end up being a "carry rifle".

Great projects, and fun guns to work on =).
Nice to have "Lego" parts to switch between guns =)

Shot with the new .177 pumper a bit tonight.

Had to change the mounts. The single screw holding the front adapter plate was not enough, and zero was starting to wander pretty badly. Went to a cheap set of high rimfire rings that came with a scope- probably the Simmons 3-9 X 32.
Groups tightened right back up....

Image
Shot with the previously mentioned 6-24 X 42m A/O Banner at approx. 9-10X. (I just turn the magnification ring until the image looks good) Zoom collar was actually between 9 and 10 X. Cal it 10 X for benefit of the doubt...
Gun is still closing up on group sizes. I've got about 150 pellets through it now- mostly the boxed crosmans as shown above.

Off hand is another story. I can shoot tightly enough with it off-hand to make my grouse head shots at 15 yds :D My off hand half inch targets look like pepper shaker caps.

Yes - very good. One of our lads (likely 60yrs/ old) had a Daisy pumper that he is shooting to 50feet - very well I might add, with a 4X scope. It's a sub 500fps .177 and oft times, maybe 3 out of 5, he's hitting the air rifle silhouettes at that range.

Got my 2nd Discovery 3-9 X 40mm A/O today, and got it mounted.
I used the 4 x4 1" rings that came with it....

Image

The .177 is the rifle on top with the r/h bolt handle.
.22 on the bottom with l/h bolt handle.

It should be a major plus having 2 rifles set up almost identically.

These little Discovery scopes are a great bargain. Reasonably good glass with a reticle that can be used for ranging. Eye relief on these is pretty forgiving at about 2 1/2".

I'm going to add lace on cheek riser pads to both rifles. Will have to put up with the Blackhawk rip stop nylon one for now, until I can find someone who's making them in a 1" height leather version.

Gun wants to shoot tonight

Image

5 of the Crosman boxed 7.9 gr. F/T domes at 3 pumps....

Image

Same target as above, shot again with Crosman Boxed 10.5 gr. Sihlouette- F/T domes...

That really spread that tight group out. I do know that the 10.5 gr likes to be driven in order to group. I'll try 6 and 8 pumps on the next session.

I am better than pleased with these rifles and scopes- bordering on amazed
