Terrible! What a horrible thing to happen.
I am probably being a moron but I can't help but notice the similarities of this story to all the fake stories on Facebook. (I know a guy, I have a friend... Followed by a warning they want you to pass on to everyone) Anyone know this gent that is telling the story itself or any news reports that this actually happened?

If it's too good to be true, It's probably a scam or fake.

Without pictures of the gauge and incident, I'm going to suggest this is utter bs.

I have been calibrating and repairing oilfield instrumentation (including pressure gauges) for ~31yrs now and have seen more than a few gauges in that time which were ruptured.

The gauges have a bourdon tube that's bent into either a C shape, or helically wound. When severely over pressured, the tube tries to straighten out and then the tubing develops a split which vents off. There's very little in the way of shrapnel in production gauges, because this is accounted for with one of several schemes to vent off in some direction other than out the front. Most times the lens is still intact.

With a typical pcp gauge, I might expect the lens to be blown out, but as one piece and not with what I would consider a lot of energy.

I have to agree this is likely a fake incident and I truly hope it is. The post itself is no longer up on the board and there has been no positive identification of the original poster. Honestly I cannot see how the fitting could blow off other than severe installer incompetence. Perhaps the glass as Gippeto has already mentioned.

Whatever you do, do not break the valve off the top of your tank, whether the valve on the gun's tank or the valve

on the HPA tank.

The second video Ace posted was CO2, 800psi to maybe 1,000psi depending on temperature, as I understand it. Imagine the

speed of a 3,000psi or 4,500psi tank. Must pay attention to what you are doing around HPA!

Nope it was HPA. Paintball C02 tanks don't got fill nipples.

Thought it was CO2 due to the white gas emission when the guy broke of the tank off his gun (is what I figured) when he dove onto the ground.
When I dumped HPA in my basement from a 4000psi tank, there was no white gas, just invisible air.
When the club had me de-gas the 100pound CO2 bottle in the range yard, it blew white gas just like that guy's tank did. Thus, I figured it was CO2.
My mistake.

For what little it's worth, my first guess would be co2 as well Daryl. If you've got that much moisture in compressed air...something is way overdue for maintenance.

Comments were quite entertaining though, lots of misinformation and interwebs lore there.

Almost all that compete in paintball in the last 20 yrs use hpa rather than co2...its cheaper and waaaay more consistent....
