I remember my dad bought be a pellet pistol back in the day (early 1960s). So now I am retired, 64 years of age and recently acquired two airguns (BB pistols). I need some help though! I am very confused as to where, when and how I can use a BB pistol legally. I live in a condo complex on the outskirts of the town of Sooke on Vancouver Island. I know I cannot shoot on our limited common property. Our Strata bylaws would likely not allow for it. I am right on the ocean front though. The ocean front is public property and quite isolated with exceedingly sparse use. Can I safely do target practice, plinking in such an area? How about in the woods nearby? What about laws regarding storage? Any help and advice would be greatly appreciated.

Hey Legden

Welcome from a fellow Sooke dweller... the bylaws are not friendly for what we like to do
https://sooke.ca/wp-content/uploads/201 ... eading.pdf

That rules out compressed spring or gas, so not even any airsoft or paintball guns let alone air rifles or pistols... however... Metchosin is not that far away and allows all kinds of firearm and related activities... and there are many forestry roads up in behind Sooke where you can fire away without any issues.

Shooting in the woods... well, so long as the pistols are not loud and there aren't any nosy folk nearby... laws regarding storage are really only mandatory for airguns throwing stuff over 500fps. Under 500fps safe storage is recommended but not mandatory, from what I've read. Definitely "best practice" though.

So... say your significant other is not especially bothered by the noise of your target shooting... and you build a nice quiet target trap with a 5-gallon paint bucket and a load of rubber mulch... there's really no reason you can't have a little mini-range inside, assuming your condo allows you the distance you want to shoot at inside.

Thanks Cisco. Yes I have created a bit of a mini range inside the condo which seems to work well. Now, as far as Metchosin is concerned...can you offer some specifics about possible locations? Forestry roads also a good suggestion! Thanks!
