I'm looking at the possibility of purchasing an air pistol. I would be using it for plinking, paper targets and pistol FT. What calibre should i be looking at purchasing?

I put a .177 JSB Exact 8.4 and a .22 JSB Exact 15.9 into both Chairgun and Strelok keeping all the variables, except projectile, common at 495 fps. Both softwares came back with the .22 having a flatter trajectory at any given yardage. I was under the impression the .177 was supposed to have a flatter trajectory given its lighter weight. Am I doing something wrong?

No, the 22 has more energy behind it so it will have the flatter trajectory. It is in the UK where theynare limited by energy at 12 ft/lbs instead of velocity that 177 becomes more attractive, with the flatter trajectory, because they can legally shoot it much faster than the 22 cal.

And, if both limited @ sub 500fps, .22 can give you much higher impact on targets ( pellet weight is doubled), so better for plinking.

For .177 you will have more choices on different pellets and much cheaper price for the pellets. So when you don't need the impact power and only need to hit the target, FT, paper targets, etc, it would be a better choice...

Of course, the best choice is own both... [emoji38]

Thanks for the feedback. I'll probably go for a .22 but now I just have to figure out what I want lol

Personally I think a clacker in .22 is a good choice...lots of fun upgrades available and no CO2 to keep buying....much as I like the 2240's.... :D

Actually I prefer start with a .177 and then go for a .22 ( don't tell me you are the legendary gunner who only need one gun in the life... [emoji38])....

Then you will surely love the power of the .22. But it's not an end, sooner, you will come back and realize the .177 has its own advantage and enjoy the life with both .22 and .177.....

This has more to do with rifle and the max fpe for FT. At 12 fpe a 22 pellet is travelling much slower than 177. 22 is carrying much more energy over the 177 at the same velocity and in this case 500fps max for pistol.

I have always used the .22 for plinking, like the energy.

OP is looking for a pistol here, right?

All "replica" pistols are .177 cal. In target-style pistols, the standard is still .177, but that is not to say there aren't plenty of variations in .22. Check the websites of several dealers who are active on this forum.

Some people here (in Canada) forget that pellet pistols sold here are not made or marketed "for punch." They are generally marketed either for reproduction quality or 10m target accuracy. You can find replicas that are impressively accurate, and you can find target pistols that have repeater capabilities and are not as accurate as single-shot target pistols.

For the uses you described, .177 offers a bigger selection and a cheaper ammo price.

I'm doing my pistol homework now (the internet is a wonderful thing). I'm likely looking for the proverbial unicorn lol. I want reliable, match quality trigger and accuracy. I'd like to pay Wal-Mart prices :D . I'm probably going for .22 for the extra punch and flatter trajectory. I need all the help I can get. I want good quality so I don't regret the purchase in a month.

For what it's worth. I don't hunt with my air pistol, and mainly shoot paper targets in either the backyard of the basement... so 177 it is.
- As a bonus, pellets are cheaper.

For FT, seems like just about everyone is using 177

=-=-=

As far as finding the unicorn... I find it easier to justify spending good $$ on a air gun, since that's what I shoot most often

Usually you get what you paid ~ and the 'extra' money you paid ( invest, I would say) would pay you more in the future as you don't need to worry about repair, maintenance, or buy another gun, and it's a pleasure for just looking at it some times .... (The one being bit by the bug is not included... They want to own all the guns in the world... [emoji38] )

So go ahead to get the best one on your list that hits your budget limit...

First off I'd verify said pistol can pull off 495fps in 22. Not many can. Like the 1322 can, but I bet you'll get real sick of pumping it. A PRod will, but a 177 PRod will also net more shots per fill, holds more shots per mag, and pells are cheaper. If it's just targets in the basement then why waste time and $ on 22?
As far as trajectory goes, chairgun will give you a curve based on BC and speed, nothing else. In real life, with a gun that hasn't been tampered with to abide by CA law, the 177 will be faster and therefore flatter. In a <500fps CA guns the actual velocity can be all over the place, with some people saying as low as 400fps. So really it depends on which gun is actually closer to 500fps. Technically, you can break 500 as long as you don't break 4.2ftlbs (pretty sure it was 4.2). Whatever the case the 177 can exceed 500, the 22 cannot, therefore the 177 can shoot flatter than 22 no matter what.
Generally I go for 177 on everything unless I'm at a power level that's simply too much for 177, like >24ftlbs. I choose pellets w/ good BC like JSB round nose or Baracuda. If I want to cause damage then I use H&N Crow Magnum which imo are better than using a 22, so really the 177 is more versatile, cheaper, flatter etc etc ;)

If both pistols are shooting the same speed the .22 is a flatter trajectory It has more initial impact energy and more end point energy . PRods are restricted in Canada . You will not easily find an air pistol over 500 fps in either caliber in Canada . I would look at this one .https://airgunarcheryfun.ca/snow-peak-pcp-pistol-pp700sa/ Just add a foot pump and you are good to go . I liked them so much I have one in each bore !

Yep ~ this is really the most powerful .22 pistol we can get in Canada... Another choice is HW44?! [emoji38]

Looks you have to go PCPs... Otherwise, like my HW45 which is just 430fps...

And we can always mod a 2240 or 1322 to reach the limit... Pair with the 2240, Diana Chaser is powerful too (stock as 2240, both @ 460fps)...
