Good shooting, too bad about your scope.
The piston kit really looks good, just curious did you Chrony the 97? If you did what’s it shooting at once it settled.
Sorry maybe I missed it is the 97 a .177?

Thanks

Joe

Hi Joe,

Thanks. And it's s a Hawke too.... I thought their whole schtick was airgun rated scopes. And searching for warranty contact info keeps saying to send it to Hawke USA. Initial fitting of the kit yielded 715fps with 8.7 gr pellets. Kind of on the low side so I added a washer. It was then doing 750, for a little under 11fpe. Haven't chronoed it recently but it's probably doing 760 - 770 now.

Best regards,
-Adrian

Thanks Adrian, would be really curious to see what kind of recoil the gun has I’m sure it would shoot pretty nicely.
Take care

Joe

Well... I don't really have any remotely scientific or methodical way to test it but it's definitely lesser recoil than stock. And that pellet on a scope turret test is overrated. It did that with just a vortek kit. Heck I think it'll do that as long as it's toned down to 12fpe. It's a lighter piston so less inertia/recoil, and all tolerances have been tightened up. You don't loose target sight picture in the scope after firing. Basically your crosshair ends up at the same spot or very close to where it was before you took the shot. But.... Joe, if you really want a tame shot cycle, a 22mm modded TX is the way to go. This titanium piston is from memory about 180-185 g. The 22mm piston is 150 g! In fact, the only reason I went with Paul Short is because Tony Leach doesn't modify the 97 platform for 22mm. I mean he has (he tried 23 and 21 mm too), but it was a one off. Not economical to mass produce per Tony. However, I prefer how the 97 shoulders. There's just something about the 97. But credit where it's due, the 22mm TX is the superior (however just) shooter.

Okaaaay, so I thought that would be my last range update yesterday but the wind died down as it was approaching evening today. So I tried 55 yard groups and the rifle impressed again. It all started when I shot a piece of clay pigeon at 55 yds and thought maybe I'll try a grouping test again. The best was a .22" 3 shot group which I don't think I'll be able to do again. Kind of wussed out though, should've gone for at least 5 shots but didn't want to spoil the group. The two at the top were 5 shot groups. The three at the bottom were 3 shot groups. Called it a day as it was getting cold and it's a 45min drive back to the city. There were a couple videos before this but only this one (with the groups) is really relevant.

What inspired the grouping test at 55 yds. It was I think a little over a inch piece of clay:

Again, Paul Short Ti Piston. Amazing results.

Funny you said the TX doesn’t shoulder right for you, I picked one up and it just didn’t fit like my 97.

Joe

Un-f***ing-real. Just a half hour ago I just sent a 177 pellet INSIDE a rimfire casing at 30 yds (rangefinder fluctuates between 29 and 30 when lased at the target board but please let me have this). Will post an update later tonight. This'll be my last day off before a long shift so I really want to keep shooting but maaaaaannnnnn... this rifle continues to f***ing impress!

HW97 with Paul Short Ti Piston ladies and gentlemen.

- see the bulge at the bottom of the casing?
- casing cut open, see the lead!?!

How's your 97 before installing that Ti Piston?
I heard the 97 is super accurate already, and it's always so difficult to step forward when you already at the top~

@Ace: Thanks!=)

@YepYep: Honestly, I never really shot it stock. Just a few shots to test operation but that's it. I knew I wanted to go sub 12fpe as soon as I got it. A 12fpe vortek kit was already waiting for it when it arrived and got installed the same day. I kind of side with the UK boys' philosophy of keeping it low powered (but accurate). In fact, just removed a washer off this rifle. It's now doing a very pleasant 10.5ish fpe. Check out this 7fpe TX200 groupings from Facebook. Shooter is Danny Easter from FB Group Lost Volume. 20 yards, amazing groups.

@HW777: Joe if you're reading this, the 97's been detuned and doing ave 737 fps with 8.7 gr FTT 4.52s with +/- 2fps deviation.

So here's the set up. I tied wire around the rimfire casings and secured the base with poster tack. These would then be secured to the target board and the wires bundled together and stapled to make sure they don't fly off.

Just to give you an idea of the scale here's a pic.

And here's where I let video take over.

At the target board:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bh1cdW8DuhA&feature=youtu.be

Start of shooting. Sorry, that's as far as the camera could zoom. Please look at the description for time stamps:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qM_yCEJLyIc&feature=youtu.be

Annnnnnd, was pleasantly surprised, it looks like there was another partial success.

- I cut open another shell and found lead on the inside.
- And there is a pronounced bump at the end.
- Although not as clear cut as this one.=)

And finally, this should be it... I don't know how much more this kit can be reviewed. Shot cycle has been improved and will lessen hold insensitivity. But keep in mind this is still a springer and you'll still have to learn the best way to shoot it.

After the shells, took the rifle to paper. At the new power level, still happy with the groups (30 yards, all 5 shots).
