Just start working on my homeworks to be prepared for the incoming PAL and the long waiting HW97...

I think the 97 is the top selling model among HWs and it also expanded a lot sub models... I will talk about those models in another thread, but want to see how ppl would like to pick the calibers first... As just new (?!), I found HW97 has .25 to choose besides the .177 and .22 caliber.

I think about it so many times, and looks I may take a .177 as the pellet is way cheaper and way many choices you can choose from... Although I think actually at the end I will pick and use only one that the gun really like and no more switching pellets after then...

And I looks like the higher speed so I don't need to wait for the pellet hits the target... [emoji38]

But I have a question here... The muzzle velocity rating here are 950fps for .177, 750fps for .22 and 500fps for .25. And can I assure they are using the same main spring?!

From Chairgun, the muzzle energy looks similar between the .22 and .25, but looks we 'lost' a big amount of energy when shooting .177. Why say so? Rated at 950fps, I think that number is from using light weight pellet, not the magnum, Silver Point or Baracuda heavy weight pellets, right? If use the heavy pellets, the fps will drop to 800 something?

Any owner can chime in to provide some data? Thanks a lot!!

And what caliber would you pick? And why?

Thanks for the input too~

that's a loaded question...it all depends on what you want your HW97 to do....
if your just shooting target...then hands down .177
if your planing on shooting pretty far like 50 yrds and over... then you'll get better trajectory in .22

Yep, mostly I think targets only... So I think I might pick a .177 too as I like to shoot my HW30 .177 vs the pop cans, cock, load, and 'ting', a nice cut hole shows up on the can. Not like the .22 will tear out a big hole on the can...

But something hesitates me is I want my .177 provides the same fpe as other calibers. I think it should as they are using the same spring, the same power plant. But wants if some owner can provide some data to prove it...

YepYep, what are you going to do with PAL rated airgun in your 9 yard range? You will punch holes in your door and scare the neighbours.
I'm very happy with my .22 cal HW97K non PAL - and as I got older and less dexterous I decided to keep everything in .22.
JSB pellets are light and relatively cheap and they shoot very well in a HW rifle .22 not much more expensive than .22. Bigger caliber pellets are damned expensive.

I mostly use my pellet guns for hunting squirrels and grouse and the .22 has better knockdown power and bucks the wind better. If I want to plink I will pick up the .177. The .22 pellets are a bit more but not a lot more.

I was thinking the same thing.

[emoji38] I will double the duct seal liner in my pellet trap and upgrade to shoot soup cans and no more pop cans~

And you guys are right ~ that's the reason I have been hesitated to get my PAL so far... But without a PAL, I have much less choices on the great guns... Even the .25 HW97 in D&L rated at 500fps, shoots 505 actual needs a PAL to buy.... And the FWBs shoots around 600fps needs a PAL... If I already had my PAL, I think Fishguy won't have the chance to take back his HW77~ ;-) Before the gentleman see Ace's comment, the deal is done~

And when you get the PAL, you at least buy one PAL rated gun then start waiting again for the great pre-owneds pop up...right?!

And looks ppl here like .22 more than .177... And I don't think I will take the FT matches, isn't that also means a .22 will be more suitable to own?!

( Actually we can forget the pellet funding issue... I looks stocked up pellets more than I can shoot now, both .177 and .22... So I don't think I will buy pellets again in a short future...)

If you are going to buy a PAL rated springer, you should seriously think about joining a range somewhere in Ontario. @ 9 yards, you'll be punching hole on hole shots with that reputable, accurate shooter which is no challenge whatsoever. I made sure to join a range with at least a minimum of 30 yards shooting distance before I bought a PAL springer. Luckily I have 50 yards to play with. At that distance, you can really test the accuracy of your HW97.

Yep~ this is a very nice reminder to NOT only enjoying the pellet piling fun but also be careful to NOT shooting the same hole (which I like with my HW30 and 35) as it will really penetrate ....

I have workmates and friends are the club members in the 'local' rangers, will ask for details when things ready~

If you join a range you better plan a bigger budget. For sure you will want to shoot more than just a springer there.

I used to have the 177 (in the wood sporter stock) and now currently own the 22 in the blackline model.

Both are outstanding shooters out of the box. I purchased the Vortek spring and piston kit but up to now it stays in its original package since my blackline shoots outstanding even without it. A bit "twangy" on the shot cycle but the pellet goes to where I point it with the proper hold...

You can never go wrong with either caliber.... ;-)

YepYep,
I must agree with most here about considering the .22cal for a 'general purpose' shooting. That caliber has some benefits with flatter trajectory on long range...more 'knock-down' power for 'pest control'...and finally, but less maybe important, is broader resale appeal/value over .177. As you had suggested...with a PAL...there's 'pre-owned' airguns that come on for sale and more and more are .22cal that are to be considered.
Although the references to the reviews on both Weihrauchs are informative insights, just to mention that they are somewhat 'dated' (2006 and 2015). Not suggesting that they are not pertinent. But in consideration to the overall weight of each rifle...the stock configuration/designs are different to what Weihrauch has on the market currently (see D&L Airguns). What I'm suggesting is to also consider, beyond caliber, is the overall weight of (any) rifle before adding a scope. Adding a one pound (+ - 500gram) scope on top of a rifle that will end-up tilting the scales 10+ lbs is a beast to carry and to hold in off-hand shooting. If you're not into Benchrest shooting where the weight factor is irrelevant but good in absorbing the recoil...a heavy airgun may find itself more often sitting in the gun cabinet than getting some 'field time'. Just my 2 cents worth.
(BTW, Ryan has informed me that his HW is a definite 'keeper'.)
Best success with your PAL and next acquisition(s) ..
Cheers!

Hawk-i
