I took 20 practice shots at 30 feet before taking 5 shots each of the HW30 and HW85. Used the same pellet. Rested the rifles when I took the shots. All the screws of the HW85 are tight and the scope is tight as well. I don't think it's me so why is my grouping so bad with the HW85? Whats wrong with the gun? Am I missing something? Thanks for the input.

My first guess is the 85 has a heck or a recoil wile the 30 doesn't.
You will need to practice your hold, breathing, and trigger control to shoot a full power springer accurately. The 30, being sub 500 fps doesn't recoil so much and is more forgiving. You have the 85 scoped? make sure to keep the bullseye in the x hair all through the shot cycle too, Don't blink.

make sure you watch your follow through on your trigger
and what are you resting the forearm on...

And I think Duke is right as the HW30. grouping should be better at just 30 feet distance... So maybe you hold the guns too tight, so the less recoil makes the HW30 better grouping, but on the HW85, the recoil just spread out everything...

Both are scoped and rested on a on a pillow when taking the shots. Only trigger hand on the gun with a light hold. You are right with the recoil. Big difference. I will practice more on my technique and try not to blink. Should you have a tighter grip hold and shoulder pressure on a full power springer to handle the recoil? thanks for the tips.

Try putting your open palm between the rifle and the pillow. That often works better, and you can get the feel of where the rifle wants to go after the pin drops - helps to get to know your springer better.

I usually shoot rested too. But I don't use a pillow to support the gun. The pillow would be too soft and takes a big area to cover the gun too much...

I have a computer chair which I removed one arm rest and use a knee down pose on the chair and put the gun on the remained arm rest to shoot.... I have a 35E which I think the gun weight and balance would be very similar to your 85... however is detuned 495fps version so much less recoil... And it can 'sit' on the arm rest very well by itself...

Actually I am holding the gun is for adjusting the POA to aim only, so I just put my open palm in front or the chair arm rest under the fore arm of the gun. And I will let the gun has its little movement, but control it to follow my breathing, and usually aim a little bit under the bullseye, and following the cross-hair's upwards movement to pull the trigger when it goes over the bullseye...

A pillow... well theirs your answer for the big scattered grouping
if your going to shoot rested, make or get yourself a shooting sandbag rest
or for now take Edmonton<500 advise put the palm of your hand between the pillow and forestock
that should tighten the grouping till you get a proper rest...and don't try and control the recoil
by holding everything tight let it do its thing

I shoot many more targets than just one before attempting to decipher what went right or wrong.
1 target tells you nothing, really, except your grouping was either poor or good on THAT target.
This was shot at 25 yards with the HW98, full power .22 cal.
Note changing from mid forend bench rest type of hold, to mid forend holding by hand on bag.
This was just a preliminary test. change one thing at a time.
The bottom left of 3 targets was shot with the same middle and upper target's pellets.
The middle bottom and right bottom were shot with different pellets - Crossman Pointed
and Crossman HP's with the same hold as the middle set of targets.
All this page of targets shows, is a lot more 'testing' is needed, especially with the Crossman pellets.
Change one thing at a time.

Try different pellets. Just because they work in one rifle, doesn't necessarily mean they will work in the other. I wouldn't even guarantee a given pellet working equally in two different rifles of the same make and model.
FWIW, my HW liked H&N Baracuda with JSB Exact Heavy a close second.

It's me and not the rifle. Used a camera tripod and just folded an old shirt for a gun rest. Placed my hand under and then took several deep breaths before the shot. Better results. Lot more shooting required to get it down pat. Thanks for all the tips.

Keep practicing . That’s a lot better group than the first . Out of curiosity , what pellets are you using ?

Here's a little tip. Shoot a small reactive target like a 9mm shell. You'll find it easier to shoot than paper, and more fun.
I do it with mine at 25m and hardly miss.

Shooting paper, not as accurate. Head thing I guess.

I use Crosman hollow points. Easy to get from Canadian Tire and cheap with my CT money. If I want to shoot at plastic soldier figures or
9mm casings, I need to make a backstop. Got to think of a design and build it. I'm sure there are a few ideas for an indoor backstop. Thanks for the tip.

I think you are doing pretty well already as the quality of the Crosman pellets could not give you much better grouping ... Give JSB Jumbo Express a try if you have a chance. It should bring you tighter grouping I think... It's same 14.3 gr weight.
