Hello,
I have been in Canada since 1989. Born in Vancouver, I spent a good part of my life in Scotland where I became hooked on airguns. The selection was amazing and I managed to collect about 10 airguns, mostly German and British, before returning to Canada.I must admit I was a bit disappointed in the rules for shooting airguns here. In the UK at the time you could purchase a legal air weapon(under 12 ft.lbs) even by mail. Then if you had a big enough backyard you could target shoot providing you didn't disturb the neighbors and did not allow any shots to stray outside your property. If you were lucky enough to know a farmer with a bit of land you could ask his permission to shoot rabbits, crows squirrels, rats and other forms of vermin as they called it.
When I arrived here I was told that all my legal(in UK) were classified as firearms in Canada and had to register. No big deal!
But where to shoot. I have used a range in my basement before the basement was finished. Now I am reluctant(my wife more so)to set up a range where things might get damaged. So it sounds like I am like the rest of the air gun enthusiasts here in Ontario-I live in Mississauga. This is frustrating as I am sure you will agree.
I was wondering has anyone thought of starting a club for airguns.I know there are many back in the UK. Often they approach a farmer and ask permission to use some of his land for setting up a range. This could involve setting targets at different ranges and having competitions?Of course the farmer would likely charge for this, but for me a small charge is fine for the chance to safely practice and meet fellow enthusiasts.I know you need a license to hunt even small game in Ontario but I wonder what the legalities of target shooting on private land maybe.
Anyways enough of an introduction from me. I would like to hear from anyone who shares my love of airguns but is frustrated by the present situation.
Thanks Ted
