Hi All,
I have been gifted an air rifle (0.177) When I was as a teenager and it was real fun but haven’t had a chance to use one in a looong time. This year I had a serious gopher problem and I tried all kinds of tricks from bait to gas bombs to traps and it is not working. My son overheard me the other day saying that I will shoot them and he liked the idea and so Im here looking for your advice for what best air gun l should go with and where best to buy it.
I don’t have a PAL yet and was wondering if a 500 FPS 0.177 would do the job.
Any suggestions from the experts is highly appreciated.

Welcome Hakim. First off, you can enjoy your .177 plinker for what it is and that would be good for paper targets and soup cans. For taking out Gophers you are going to need something more powerful. A highly tuned .22 at 495 fps makes just about 8 ft lb at the muzzle, which if you believe the following, wouldn't be enough for a humane kill.

So, I think you are going to need a non-PAL .25 and I'd recommend a PCP or CO2 rifle to help you keep on target *head shot* for humane kill. All this assuming it's legal for you to dispatch vermin on your property.

A non-PAL .25 cal will make about 12 ft lb with hunting pellets at around 22 gr. That would be OK for gophers at 20 yards.

Welcome!

a sub-500fps 177 for gophers... I wouldn't try it.

In my opinion, best thing to do is invite AIR FT guys to your place. They will help you with your pest problem at the same time you get the chance to see and try thier toys - that would be first hand info from them. Contact Richard aka Castle02 or Brian aka rocker45.

That is a P.A.L. rifle. OP does not have a P.A.L.

BTW - welcome to the club, Hakim.

I agree with Duke for the most part, although I think a CO2 rifle in .22 or springer actually making close to 500fps would do for
field rats to 20 or 25yards.

Such a low powered (sub 500fps) .25 would "likely" have excessive drop (arc of trajectory) which might make good accurate hitting a problem.
I agree that inviting that bunch of air rifle shooters from Alberta for a gopher shoot is a GREAT idea.

No No No, Daryl! 500 fps gives the same trajectory in any calibre, a bit better the higher the BC.
