I have a Marlin .22 Magnum bolt action (probably less than 50 shots) and I notice about half the empty shell cases have a crack down the side (maybe a quarter inch or less). Is this a problem?

Have you tried another brand of ammo?

I didn't notice it before with another brand. This is a box of Winchester Super X that was given to me. They were probably bought in the 90's. I was just doing some Google work and it seems this brand has a history of this. I don't think it will be dangerous to use them, but I will avoid them in the future.

I was going to ask if it was Winchester ammo. Since it seems to be like a common problem.

I have had some brands split in the HMR but did not notice which brand, either
Federal, Winchester, CCI or Hornady. It is caused by brittle brass that was not
properly annealed before being loaded by the company, or - it has age-hardened.
The chamber of your rifle needs to be carefully cleaned after this happens, if you
are experiencing extraction difficulties due to the burnt powder in the chamber.
Too much of it is bad as it will or can actually remove metal if happening in the same
place, too often.

I now remember it was Winchester ammo, in the 20gr. HP version, which shoot best in my current Marlin HMR.

These are 40 gr. bullets. The gun is a bolt action and I haven't had any eject problems. It was an open box when I got it, maybe 30 left.

Age will do it to some, but others, like the HMR's were not old, just brass that was not properly annealed.
Of course, if you have a rifle that does it with and and ALL .22 mag. ammo of different makes, then it is likely due to an oversized chamber.
