Hello folks

I just read that if you cant find Pellgun oil , Automatic transmission fluid (ATF)
is just as good. Anyone else here read about this?

Apparently it wont damage rubber seals etc

Any thoughts?

A search of this forum will reveal several discussions about Pellgun oil, and while the opinion that auto tranny fluid is a good substitute, I know of no one who stands and practices on this wilderness legend. My here would agree that 30w, non-detergent motor oil is the best substitute and lacks virtually no lubricant attributes found in penguin oil.

You may think its ATF due to it being red, but it is not.

MSDS for it, says it just Monolec 8430 engine oil. AKA 30 weight.

1 tube of pellgun oil is like 12$, 1 L of 30w is 8$

FYI I use ATF to clean carbon off guns. I wouldn't really use it around rubber, unless it is like a hydraulic grade O ring.

I use regular 30W-ND motor oil instead of pellgunOil. It's the same thing but has no red colour addictive. Many years ago, on the old Yellow Airgun Forum, there was a member who worked in a warehouse that had 45 gallon barrels of the Monolec from Lubrication Engineers in Fort Worth, TX. He confirmed that a red dye was added to the product and it was the same as PellGunOil, only much cheaper. You pay for the convenience of the tiny tube rather than the 10 cents of oil inside. Imagine having a 45 gallon barrel of PellGunOil!

I am new to Simple steel BB air hand guns, and cannot find any Pellgun oil anywhere... and it seems really expensive
So its ok to use 30W-ND on the tips on the C02 capsule before inserting?

Thant would be great.
Canadian Tire has it's 10W, would that suffice?

click the select grade box under the price and choose 30W - they have both. I don't suppose the viscosity makes much difference in an airgun, but 30W is what we use.

Just be minded, you still need as little as one small drop on the co2 capsule tip which is enough although you are buying a 1L bottle not a small tube~ ;)

Many years ago I bought a litre of 30W-ND from CanTire and leave it in my hobby room for CO2 and pumper airguns. I use a q-tip to dip in the jug to apply a drop to the powerlet neck before inserting or to wet the seals on pumpers. Plain 30W works just as well for this purpose. Many lawnmower oils are 30W (check the jug label).

Don't worry both will work. Just normally the detergent oil, has anti wear properties, additives that suspend carbon etc, more suited for metal on metal. And many think the Monolec is ND. But doing some research it does have additives.

ND oil we used to call break in oil. You wanted the rings and bearings to wear in a bit on newly assembled engines. With the additives it would prevent that and take longer.

But when the Pellgun oil is mainly to do a metal on rubber contact. It's okay to use ND.

Not trying to muddy the waters here but Automatic Transmissions are full of rubber/nitrile orings and seals. I have been using ATF on my pumpers (Blue Streak and 760 crosman) since 1976 and have never had to even open up either of these rifles. And according to my latest chronograph results they are still shooting as they did new. I have long since forgotten how many shots have been through my Streak, but I still use it at least once a week for about 50 shots at a time. Just my 2 cents.

Heck of a testimony there, 5dotrz. Well done.
Synthetics including "Tranny oil, do not have petroleum oils in them.
They were synthesized FROM petoleum oils(products), but do not actually have petroleum in them.
Petroleum oils will not maintain their integrity in the high heat environment of the automatic transmission
but rather convert to asphalt in the heat of that environment.
That is how I understand them & could be why they do not attack the seals over time - no Petroleum.

I've always been amazed how much people focus on the "non detergent" part (I think it was mentionned in Daisy litterature a while ago if I'm not mistaken) but not only is Monolec detergent, their litterature mentions "exceptional detergency".

At first I was like that.. But then went to college for diesel engines. So did more research.
