hey all, first post, been reading for a little while and finally decided to sign up.

I'm looking for a semi auto for rat patrol in our barn. Quick follow up shots is the only reason for semi auto...we have lots of rats!

I've been reading about the Sig mcx, but am a bit put off as the reviews are not great overall with many reviews on the co2 system complaining of it leaking down.

Not looking to break the bank but reliability and accuracy are a must... so lets say a budget of $600

Also would really appreciate some advice in regards to pellet size .177 or .22 and also CO2 or pump, and finally better to go over 500 fps or under?

thanks in advance

.177 will do just fine for rats in the barn, but I do like the extra smack of the .22 cal.
which is why I bought the HW97 in .22. I would suggest a high-end springer, however
something like a the Umarex Gauntlet can run 9 and 12 ounce CO2 can. I use the 12
ounce 'CO2' bottle on mine and it's good for over 500shots. The velocity is well within
the P.A.L. range, although I have not chronographed it. It is in .22 and smacks very
hard - harder than the HW 97 and 98 in .22 cal. It also comes with 10 shot mags. & is
VERY accurate. I have tested to 45 yards & it is printing 1/2" groups at that range on CO2.
The U-tube video noted the gun would run in the 18fpe range, on CO2. I do not know that
it will do that, but it does hit hard at 20yards compared to other rifles.
This gun, with plastic stock can be left 'charged' in definitely, as far as I know. Mine has had
a 12ounce CO2 tank on it for over a year and still pops them off when tested.

As Daryl said, the extra force of a .22 will always be better in getting a instant kill, which many say is the only way to hunt live creatures. As well, air guns that shoot at greater than 500 fps will also assist in giving you a quick kill.

Since you asked about over/under 500 fps, would expect you have your PAL.

Although the Sig MCX claims around 700 fps with a .177 pellet, many reports say it comes in at a lot less in real world conditions. That said, with an 88/90 gm. CO2, you will have more than 300 good shots to wipe out a lot the rats. Get extra 30 shot magazines, and practice quick mag swaps, and you are ready for an afternoon of rat control.

I have the MPX version and find it has nice accuracy at 25 ft. in my basement range with just open sights. So the MCX with the longer barrel should be more accurate. And you can always add optics to the rails for better accuracy. I do not have any issues with CO2 leaking with either the 88/90 gm CO2, or the specially designed 12 gm. CO2 adapter.

Two cautions, before you start pesting. Make sure sure you sight your gun in, at the distance you plan on shooting at. And make sure you use a short enough hunting pellet, so that it does not jam the pellet feeding belt. Maybe Crosman Destroyers?

If you like the Sig MCX platform but want it in .22 cal & higher fps, the new Sig Sauer Virtus .22 cal. MCX is suppose to be out very soon.

Other semi auto air rifles that might work for you are, the new Umarex 850 M2 .22 cal, CO2 semi auto air rifle, which is an update of the older Umarex Hammerli 850 .22 CO2 air rifle

https://www.airgunsource.ca/us/ux-850-m ... l-co2.html

https://dlairgun.com/collections/hammer ... 1486148668

Then there is this, a full auto .22 cal air machine gun, but not sure where to get it, even though they say it is legal in Canada.

On a more economical route there is the Crosman 1077 & Umarex Ruger 1022, .177 cal. semi auto CO2 pellet rifles. The PAL versions should have enough power to safely kill a rat at distance. These can be bought for around $150 or less, and use the less expensive 12 gm. CO2.

Good luck & happy hunting.

I would build a Crosman 2260.. Now it wouldn't be a semi auto, but a repeater. Parts are cheap, mods are easy. 14.5" barrel is almost flush with the mag tube. Those new side lever breeches look nice. I know my Kral was super slick. But can get some lower profile, magazines for these Crosman. But it would be a very light and compact ratter.

This was a HPA one I made.

I don't know if I could trust a Crosman 1077.

Wow! lots of info, really appreciate you guys taking the time to respond. i'm really new to the air gun world, and not familiar at all with most of the guns listed.

I do have my PAL, so that is not an issue...

i will read through the responses, research the guns named and watch the videos etc and come back with questions.

cheers all!

Unfortunately it will be difficult to find a good CO2 rifle that is a true semi-auto. The best ratter CO2 rifles I have seen were the old Crosman 600 pistols adapted with longer barrels and a buttstock. These were true semi-autos that shot up to 10 pellets with a short trigger pull. Lots of what we see now are really revolvers that require a long trigger pull to rotate the magazine.

Possibly what you need is something that doesn't require handling pellets for every shot. If you shoot rats at night then maybe something like this Beeman 1085 will work with a flashlight mounted on the rail at the forestock. You can add mounts, a scope, flashlight, buy pellets & CO2 and still stay within budget.

Another option is the ASG Tac Repeater.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OUcLGgvHNLA

Looks like similar action & specs. to the full power Crosman 1077, but can use the 88/90 gm. CO2 for more shots per CO2 cartridge. As well as giving you the option to use just one or two 12 gm CO2's with the proper CO2 adapter.

Not sure where to buy it, but Bear River Outdoors (Now called Barra) has been selling what looks to be the same air rifle (except branded as Bear River), for a couple of years now.

https://www.bearriveroutdoors.com/colle ... 5784297501

And the Bear River version, if it actually shoots at 800 fps, should be sufficient for humane rat kills at a reasonable range.

So if you look, there are a number of options, for a semi auto pellet rifle with the power for pest control.

Please advise us of the outcome.

That guys review has it at around the same power as the 1077.. With the metal clip around 600 FPS with 7.33 grn pellets.

And the amazon review has a 41% 1 stars review, mainly due to leaks. Would be costly to leak out a 11$ 88 gram cartage.

I have zero experience with the ASG Tac Repeater/Bear River MX 1000, other than Andy's review. Andy gave it a positive review, but did not recommend it for any hunting. I only brought it up as it has a larger CO2 tank & some people are missing the 88 gm. CO2 adapter for the Crosman 1077, that has not be available for years.

https://www.pyramydair.com/article/Crosman_1077_2004/20

https://www.pyramydair.com/s/m/Crosman_1077AS/407

So anyone buying it should do their research & heed Leadslinger's warning.

Also, I think the the closed thing in an under-lever or break barrel to a semi-auto is the new .177 Umarex Synergis.

https://www.pyramydair.com/s/m/Umarex_S ... Combo/4807

It is rated to get 1,000 fps with lead pellets. I am waiting for the .22 version that should be out soon.
