I've been thinking of upgrading the Hawke Airmax 3-9X40 on my Diana 430L to the above model and have received differences of opinion on doing this due to eye relief. The eye relief on the 3-9X40 is given as 3-1/2 inches and I find this works OK for me. It is given as 3 inches on the Compac 4-16X44. Other larger Hawke scopes give eye relief as 4 inches.

My main reason for the upgrade was for an illuminated reticle, and side focus, but I was not wanting to place an overly large scope on my Diana 430L.

Thoughts & opinions on this matter are welcome, particularly if you are currently using this model of scope.

I would say, absolutely go for it. Love my AirMax 4-16 with lighted reticle. Using it exclusively on spring guns.

The difference between 9 and 16X will be huge.

Thanks for the input Mac. Question - Do you have any problems with the 3 inch eye relief, and what mounts are you using?

Thanks again.

I have the modified RWS Bullseye mounts, but any good mounting system would do. SportMatch or BKL one piece mounts or a set of mounts from same companies with the two fastening screws per mount. A lot of the FT guys are going with the set of mounts and not having issues with them. They are shooting 12 ft/lb however, so if your gun is high power, I would go with the one piece mounts that tend to have a lock screw that fits down into the dovetail on the gun. Some like the Dampa mount as well.

No issues with eye relief.
