Never used a chronograph before and would like to test pellets in my HW80 .22 800fps rated.
Where can I buy a budget price chronograph that would be descent for me to use in backyard (want to determine velocity and ft/lb power).

I have a Shooting Chrony, but I just tried to find them online and instead I found that they are out of business. I believe they were made in Canada too- but I guess technology with bluetooth and phone apps must have cut into the sales in favor if the phone app chronies like FX.
Anyhow, search the forum for posts on this topic you'll find there are some extensive discussions and recommendations.

I have 3.. A clamp on muzzle one from China that cost me about 30$, a Chrony F1 and a FX radar. All seems to be accurate plus or minus a few FPS.

I haven't had any issues with my F1 and shooting Chrony been around for 30 years. But the rumors are true, that they shut down. So if you shoot it, you no longer can exchange it for a new one. ANY chrony with sunshade, ditch the metal rods and replace them with wooden dowels. That way if you shoot the rods, it shatters, and doesn't transfer the energy thru the rods into the sensors. Ask me how I know?

But I'm really liking my FX radar, and cannot wait for them to come out with the FX radar firearm edt. Quick to setup, compact, and no longer required to write down the numbers on piece of paper.

If you are not going to use it alot, and want just a quick check. The Chinese clamp on muzzle one or the tripod on is the best.

I am tempted to try one of the cheap chinese one's, as I have an old Competition Electronics chronograph, that's over 20 years old. some days, I wonder how well it's actually working, as it doesn't always pick up .177 cal pellets.

I would suggest the FX, or a Caldwell if you want to chrono. PB's as well at some point.

FX radar ATM is kind of finicky with PBs. And only goes to 1300 FPS. They said they are coming out with a firearm soon. It took alot of T&E for it to register 10 shots with a 9x19, that I know is sub 1100 FPS, and sub 800 FPS 22LR.. Might be because the powder smoke.

But been flawless with my airguns, in my darker basement. My F1 barely comes out to play now.

I wouldn't be using it much, just want to shoot in the backyard to test different pellets and calculate what ft/lb my HW80 is shooting.
Right now, I'm having a hard time learning it and suspect it's because of the big recoil. I suspect I could tune the power down to help but need a chrono to test first.
$75 budget would be nice if I can stay around that price... any suggestions and links would be appreciated !
Again, I wouldn't be using it a ton.

Would something like this work for .177 BB's & .177/.22 cal pellets?

Seems to work in the video. Specs. say it will work for 4.5mm which is equal to .177.

Is the Fx Radar Pocket Wireless Chronograph really worth spending $240 ?
People are telling me they have cheap $30 chineese models that work fine ?

My main interest is figuring out the power of my HW80 which right now has a big recoil kick and is giving me trouble learning how to shoot.

Personally, I always rather spend a little more for a nicer tool/piece of equipment that I know I can get support for.

If it's for a 1x time out-of-curiosity deal... I'd look for someone local to you that have one and invite them over for a drink :drinkers:

Most spring airguns have duel recoil and harder to shoot. Run heavier pellets, to get the FPS down, but still gonna have that recoil.

I too would suggest the heavier pellets, in the 16.0gr. to 23.0gr. range. H&H makes them as-does JSB.
The Hades might work well - they do in my HW97 in .22, and in every other .22 I have (PCP's)
Predators are 16.0gr. and the others are heavier yet, both makes mostly 18.1 to 22.3gr.
My HW98 in .22 preferred the 21.30 gr. H&N RN's as well as the 19.09gr. Barracuda Hunter Extremes.
You will have to find where to hold your hands and where to rest the rifle on the bags if shooting from a rest.
My 98 made it's best power (FPE) with the heaviest pellets. It got better, the heavier pellet I went to.
That should show they were not too heavy for that rifle. Since yours is even more powerful, I'd be using the
heavy pellets.
