I’m in the market for a .308 for deer. I’d prefer it to be in excellent shape, not a beater. If you’ve got an extra kicking around, let me know!

Hi there. I have a browning blr on here, might be more of a beater than you're looking for though.

Hi, thanks for the heads up, but, yes, that’s a little worse for the wear as far as what I was hoping for.

Thank you though!

I do have one .30/06 I could part with. It's a 1936 Model 70 .30 Gvt. 06 S#1830, so made in Sept. Winchester started making model 70's in April 1936.
24" bl. Shoots just over 1/2" with 165's and 180's. Will include the scope bases, which do not fit newer model 70's. Might be more than you
are looking to spend. I'm in P.G. $1,500.00.

Here are targets, 165gr. SST and 180gr. SST. Pulled one with the 180's.
Shot at 100 meters with 4X Lyman PermaCenter scope which was new in box.
The first target was made by this rifle, 100 meters with the 165gr. load and the
rifle's factory iron sights. The higher group is my first 3 shots from this rifle in 1.789".
The next 4 shots after a sight adjustment, run 1.632". It's a good shooting rifle that
fits like a glove.
The target is an old practice prone 200 yard (reduced 300yard) SFC open and any sight target
from the 70's which was patched. I find they make good targets for open sight shooting.

Here's the scope used in the tests.
The rifle has been refinished and re-blued.
The 165gr. SST load chronographs 2,960fps for 3,210fpe and the
180 gr. SST load runs 2,745fps for 3,012fpe.

Daryl, that is a very nice gun indeed. Looks to be a well done refinish job too!

I think that is more than I was looking to spend. My wife just bought a new laminate Tikka t3x and used up most of the gun funds for a bit. I’m probably looking for something more into the $500-$700 range, maybe with a trade involved as well.

Do you find you run into a trouble with sourcing parts for these classics? I realize they are relatively simple in operation, but eventually something will fail.

You have a very nice collection. Every time you post something I haven’t seen I’m impressed.

Hi fishguy - NP - as to parts, most or many can be obtained from Gun Parts in Kingston NY and Numrich Arms in West Hurley NY.
I have, in the past, bought most 'parts' I needed, from Gun Parts (80's and 90's). I haven't needed much of late.
Some things are not available across the line any more, of course. For a while, you couldn't even buy a trigger from the US.
http://www.tradeexcanada.com also has some parts, but not much.
I do suggest, however, you check out tradeexcanada for a .308 or a .30/06. They will have a lot of husky .30/06's and the odd
BSA in .308 as well as many 9.3x57's, 9.3x62's, 6.5x55's & 8x57's in the hunting and sporting rifles section, under the products header.
Good luck shopping. I've bought a number of firearms from these folks. Anthony is very good to deal with & they moved to Ontario after
Quebec brought back the registry.
I found this one interesting on just going through them now.
https://www.tradeexcanada.com/content/h ... s-30-06-93
There are 22 pages of used rifles for sale, with some 40 per page.
It will pay to go through them all and save the pages of ones that are interesting
for further study.
Page 8 has a couple .308's.
Sabatti .308 on page 18 is fairly good, by the looks of it.
https://www.tradeexcanada.com/content/s ... on-308-win
This .30/06 looks quite descent for $369.00 on page 22. Likely very nice if re-finished as it should be.(most actually)
https://www.tradeexcanada.com/content/h ... 8-30-06-26

One thing about these guns and the descriptions.
I have found that after a proper cleaning, the bores are always better than represented.

From the same place, the brand new Zastava rifles are $695.00 in a variety of calibres.
Listed under "Hunting and Sporting Arms (New)

Daryl has some good advice. You can also go for a Savage Axis if you want to buy new. They are pretty accurate for the price.

Ruger and Mossberg also have a cheaper run of rifles. I don't know anything about the Ruger. I found the Mossberg action
to be crunchy/rough. I would suggest a/the Zastava over any of those, though in a new rifle. Unfortunately, they (tradeex)
do not have a .308 in them.
I have total faith in Mauser Actions and have familiarity with them since the 1960's, indeed, I have a number of rifles
with Mauser 98, 96 and Mk.10 Mauser 98 actions as well as a Zastava M98 bl. in 9.3x62 I recently put on a spare 98 action I had.
I had a Savage Axis & was accurate in .25/06, but the trigger was horrific and non-adjustable so I sold it. Didn't like the plastic
trigger guard either, nor the cheap hollow-ish plastic stock.
This one, an 8x57, has a nice piece of wood with good grain flow.

https://www.tradeexcanada.com/content/z ... 8-m70-8x57

Loaded in the USA, the 8x57 has similar ballistics to a hot loaded .30/30.
Loaded in Europ. it is the equivalence to .308 and .30/06.
This is due to the USA loading it to 35,000psi breech pressure and with .321" bullets in deference to the model 1888 rifles the USA ammo companies think are still around.
The 88's had a .318" groove diameter instead of the normal .323" groove diameter. In factory ammo, you would have to use Norma, PPU, RWS or other Euro ammo to achieve
the full potential of this round. It is certainly the equivalence of the .308 and very close to the .30/06 (if you are a handloader or use Euro ammo.
Handloaded, due to the greater expansion ratio thanthe .30/06, it will duplicate .30/06 factory loads by using handloads.
I have that data, by "Pacific" Handloading, the predecessor to Hornady.
No flies on the 8mm Mauser - for the handloader. The 195gr. Hornady Bullet is super in this case, as-is the 180gr. GMX - for everything from pigs, to moose/elk and big bears.

here's the Mossberg Patriot from Cabalas.
The only picture is in .243, but it is available in .308- $629.99 with 3-9 scope and mounts
looks like most outlets have it.
