I always wanted to refinsh my HW50's beech stock in a different colour. Finally, I ordered blue wood stain and got on with the project last week.

The original HW walnut colour finish was sanded down to bare wood. Multi coats of the blue stain was added until the desired navy blue colour was achieved. Then I used Antique Oil for the final coatings.

Here it is. Beauty is in the eyes of the beholder.[emoji12]

Did your 50s not have any checkering? Just curious as the one I had did.

Yeah, this one came with the older stock. That is part of the reason I re-did the finish. Honestly, would not know what to do with sanding around checkering. Kind of afraid of using paint strippers.[emoji12]

Paint strippers are the only way to get old finish out of checkering. It's easy to use, just use good ventilation
and gloves.
POC (piece of cake)

Your stock would look better if more coats of oil were used to fill the pores in the wood (smoother finish).

I will give it a try some day, using paint stripper that is.
I have been adding additional coats of Antique Oil as I use the guns. The previous coats of oil seemed to gradually soak into the wood and made the finish dull. As more coats are added over time, I do notice the sheen on the stock gets shinier.

Once you think the pores are filled, or almost filled, sanding lightly with 1500grit black coloured wet/dry paper, used dry
sanding down almost to the wood(don't want to sand the colour), then applying 3 thin finish coats will make for a very
nice "finish".
"Finished" in this method can leave you with a Belgium Browning or Weatherby-like piano finish, if taken to the perfectly
filled, then 3 thin coats then polished ending.
Almost filled is almost as complete.
This is the finish you can make, if you desire. I've done this a couple times and it is lovely indeed.
