Hey smart people!
Some spring piston guns use the rod in the center to engage the trigger. I'm wondering what material that rod should be? I thought possibly a spring steel like 1095 would do the trick, but would it need to be tempered?

Well yeah. I imagine you'd anneal it first then machine to shape. Austenitize, quench and temper the final shape. Temper 1 hr at 300 C for a balance of hardness and toughness. Do you have access to an austenitizing furnace? You can water quench 1095 as long as there are no sharp corners. Also consider getting some W1 tool steel, that should do you as well.
