If your 3 rear guide blocks are different lengths allowing experimentation then by all means I would do that.

yeah, I’ve gone through all the .177 pellets I had, mostly those Grizzly ones, 8.6 gn. Now I’ve got 300 of lighter ones - 6.9 gn, I’m sitting down to match them right now

Yes, since I heard about working the Back Spring Guide, I’ve wanted to cut it up! I’ve gotta order it first, though

modding the cheap crosmans and getting some pretty awesome results. Cheap springers too, qb78s, something would come along and numerous posts on modding and figuring out and fine tuning on said gun would be everywhere.

I just saw a qb78 locally on craigslist, had only read them mentioned here. I liked it, thought about it. Hm

Do you need to spend a bunch of money on parts though?
If it's spacers you're after I could cut some up for you. They should fit in a letter envelope I imagine. Will be making parts this weekend anyway, would be nothing to cut a few spacers. Let me know.

The qb78/crosman 160 is an excellent platform. And it cocks like a Lee enfield. Lots of potential, only problem is the QC isn't the greatest. Maybe they're better now, I don't know.

Yes, I have one more sort of essential order to make, from Crosman. A spring mostly, spacers, maybe chamber oil.

If you could send a couple spacers, that would be awesome! I don't know, is 3/8" a starting point? A 1/4" ? That was my question, how much spacer for 20 fps?

How are you doing for piston liners? I could send you a Liner Kit, in exchange. The ones I've made, they don't show any signs of degrading. They just work, as I imagine they should. They're quick for me to make.

Yeah, don't think I need another rifle.

Cheers

It'll take some experimenting, I doubt there is a way to tell you how much preload to use. You may get no gains at all. I actually lost velocity by adding preload to my xs28... I still don't understand why. My only guess is that my seal failed at whatever pressure I generated, and just bypassed. If that makes any sense.

But in a sub pal rifle, you should get something. I spaced up a full power maccari spring to coil bind in a phantom 22 and got it to shoot at 700fps. Then was told by someone here that my chronograph was broken.
I don't recall what it was at for a starting point.

Good luck with that!
I said this after my second or third rifle, and each acquisition thereafter.
I've actually been pretty good for the last few years, until I found a B3 under lever in .22 in Canada for $110 shipped.
My other two B3s in .177 told me they were lonely.
I had good intentions...

PS. Take up Killer on his offer of washers. Thick washers (thin enough to mail in a letter envelope) can be stacked on the guide to give the preload you want. Installed at the piston, they add piston weight; at the rear of the guide, they do not. Both locations affect preload the same amount.

Thanks. Looking forward to trying this. I've found some washers with different holes I may try temporarily.

Ok. I was shooting 475 fps with the 8.7 gn Grizzly. I’ve just chronied the 7.1 gn RWS Super-H-Point, see photo.

1.6 gn lighter, 35 fps faster. Wow. I’m just learning this, I saw it with the heavy pellet in my .22. Ok.

But yeah killer, I think you were spot on with a half to a grain. Maybe I don’t need a spacer! Cheers

Yep, I agree~

And the Grizzly is a good value practice pellet (means you won't use it in competition) which is not bad at all, but in the heavy side and not as good as other 'good' pellets. You should give other pellets a try.

Thinking your rifle is actually in a very good shape already and you can enjoy shooting it without open it again but by testing pellets or other ways to tighten the group and have the speed you desire ~

Washing the grizzly pellets should help with their accuracy by a good margin.
You could google it, or just wash them in a 4 cup measure, with warm water
and some dish soap - swirl them around, then strain, dry on paper towel or
cloth. Amazing how much "chaf" there is. Chaf in this scenario is bits and pieces
of lead that was inside the hollow base of the pellets. This throws the balance
off which is not good for accuracy.

I think I will give it a try this time~ ignored the washing and lubing on pellets before as I didn't think it worths but lock down makes me have more time stay in home than before... :(

I got some Grizzly last time when I met a good price in visiting PA, however it works good in my 30 but too heavy for the 495fps HW30s and not accepted by the higher power but picky Pro Sport... So they were put aside for a good while...

Well!!

The Grizzly looks really needs a good bath... They are laying on the kitchen towel enjoying the blue sky and drying themselves on my balcony decks in the wind and sun now...

The water just love to stay in the hollow base of the pellet and better to use a compressed air gun (you know what I mean, not your FX PCPs... [emoji38]) to blow dry them, but I don't have that in home and don't think to use Qtip in here is a good idea for hundreds pellets....

Below is a picture I must took to show what I found when I only poured the pellets out then found on the 'empty' tin... Image

Yeah, there is an amazing amount of "debris" left over.
Tks for the picture.

I didn’t choose Grizzly, they came with the used Optimus. I don’t know if I’ll have them again. I don’t know where to get them.

Mostly I’m shooting RWS and H+N, some JSB. I’m getting more JSB, for the .177.
