Hi Guys! Well, I did some modding on this MX9 to bring up the velocity on it and I think it is well worth the effort. This particular gun was regulated to about 110bar from the factory, and shooting around 760-775fps, which is not quite the power most guys would like in a 25 caliber.
I watched Airguns of Michigan's great video on adjusting the regulator and tore into the gun. Here's the video for those interested. You can skip to the 13 minutes mark if you only are concerned about removing and adjusting the regulator.
https://youtu.be/mZrRRrVWuyI
First off removing the tank is a bit tricky. Sticking it in a vise between two 1x4's worked great as the Aselkon factory guys seem to think they are sealing these tanks by tightness alone instead of relying on the oring, lol. Once that is off then there is the four screws to remove to get the bottle to reg adapter off. Then I drilled out the angled port from the bottle to the regulator to 3/16" to hopefully improve air flow from the bottle to the reg and improve recovery time for the regulator and maybe increase the power a little. (see pic)

After that there is a grub screw on the bottom to remove and you can pull the regulator housing out of the gun. Then comes the tricky part of removing the regulator. I highly recommend watching the YouTube video listed above for help in removing it and adjusting it.
After removing the regulator I removed the valve stem and poppet and drilled out the port hole on the top to 3/16 (see pic for port hole, still not drilled in pic).
Image
Then to get to the port hole in the breech you need to remove the screw on the bottom (see pic) and stick the drill bit in the hole and drill out the port that goes to the barrel. (remove barrel first.)
Image

Then the barrel is the last port to drill and after that you need to remove any burrs on the inside from drilling it out. I used some needle files.
I put it all together after guessing at how much to turn up the regulator. Stupidly I didn't keep track of exactly how much I turned it but i believe it was about a 1/3 of a turn roughly.
After filling the regulator was just above 150bar, which after a couple weeks has settled around 160. Yesterday I shot a clip of shots and it was getting consistently in the high 890's. Today I refilled it and shot a full string.
From 250 bar to 160bar I got a full 70 shots. Wow! that was a surprise! I expected less shots than that at such a high reg pressure.

The average velocity was a bit lower than yesterday, ended up at 876 and 43.3fpe. It would vary from the 860's to the 890's. (898fps was highest recorded shot). I was shooting free hand into a pellet trap though with varying depths of plumbers putty so that may have affected the radar reading some, not sure. I find the fx radar seems to be more touchy about shot placement when shooting at a short distance of 5 yards than one that measures the pellet speed as it passes through the sensors. (this is subjective. I also found the sensor chronys are touchy about where you shoot through so I'm probably just complaining about my own lack of consistency in shot placement)

The standard deviation was 10.89 and 42fps spread which is a bit more than I'd like. If the highest and lowest velocity shot are removed it ends up at 35fps spread, a bit better. This gun has hardly been shot so it probably needs a bit of settling in, which is pretty common for regulators.

The efficiency ended up 1.1fpe/cubic inch, which is pretty decent for a large caliber I think! Especially with the small plenum available.

Next I need to test the accuracy at this higher power. I tested a stock power .25 cal MX6 with my dad a few weeks back, and was grinning at the accuracy once it was dialed in at 50 yards. Was shooting shotgun shells off a gravel pile and could hit them every time. Makes a guy want to get out and shoot more often. 8)

If all goes well and it shoots accurate it'll be ready for someone that wants a tuned ready to go gun. 8)]

Nice work Wes. Pretty similar to the MX6. Probably the same rifle other than the stock and the trigger. I’m sure after a tin of pellets the regulator will settle in.

Amazing good work, Wes. Ahh - 70? shots per fill - amazing.
I kinda like the looks of that rifle. It was the MX5 I was more interested in, though.
PM Please on price- tuned.

Thanks Daryl and Denis. I agree that regulator should calm down after some shooting. Yeah I was really surprised at the shot count myself as it is listed at 65 shots at the stock power. I think the efficiency went up with the higher reg pressure because I've noticed at the lower regulator pressure that hammer is so heavy that you basically get no velocity adjustment with the spring tension screw in the back. That's a sign it's wasting air at lower pressure with that heavy hammer, blasting it out the barrel. Turning up the reg is worth it for sure, at least in my opinion.

Sounds great and makes sense, Wes. Looking forward to the testing.

Thought I would mention - this modded Aselkon MX9 is headed for BC as we speak. :drinkers: :drinkers: This calls for a couple, I think.

Oh yeah - really looking forward to this one. I just might have to put this scope on it.
Of course, that would free up the .25 Condor, hmmm.

You’re right Wes , these rifles need much higher regulator pressure than the factory setting to get the hammer adjuster to work. I haven’t done a full string over the chrony yet but I’m sure even with the smaller bottle on there , I get more shots than advertised between the 250 bar fill to 150 bar regulator setting. Way more than what’s needed for a days hunt. Heck a seasons worth of hunting for that matter.

Hey Wes,

Did you do any of these mods to the MX9 I've got here? I know you said you tinkered with it. Just curious if it's been drilled out already.

Hi Jason, yes I believe I drilled it out some but I did not turn up the regulator on that one. You had one of the test models and Aselkon said they were sending me guns that would be shooting faster than what the test ones were so I drilled that one out to get it up to the spec sheets indicated it should be shooting.
Turning up the regulator will make a big difference for you I think.

Which hole is it leaking out of? Is it out the barrel?
