I quickly get tired of shooting paper targets so I usually turn to cans of various sizes. A small Campbell's soup can works well for 30-40 yard offhand shooting with an air rifle or even an accurate pistol. Last week I put together a flipper target from scrap items I had at home. I've had it out shooting three times and no problems.

You can often get plastic totes (without lids) at thrift stores for cheap and they often have spoons for about 25 cents each. I found a thick metal spoon that took a bit of effort to bend at the handle. I made the handle into a loop and cut off the excess. I had a metal rod, some washers, and a second rod for a sleeve. A couple of holes were drilled in the tote and the parts were assembled. I drilled a second set of holes a bit higher so I can hang a 6" metal lid as a gong for 50+ yard shooting. Some thick wood scraps were screwed onto the bottom of the tote to catch the pellets.

The spoon spinner gives quite a bit of satisfaction when it flips around. It's holding up fine with countless hits from .177cal going 880fps. I still have the lid for this tote so I load it up with gear when I'm on my way to my country shooting area.

I love this. Simple, effective, and affordable.

I like the utility of it and also the simplicity. I absolutely agree that when something spins, flips, knocks down, ..... it never gets tired. I use paper to set the aim-points up, but then I use reactive targets almost exclusively. Great fun.

Spoons are fun!
At the cabin, I have a few of those in the back...

And I've somehow ended up with a few of these over the years

I see. It must be you who had been buying up the Canadian stock before I could get my hands on them. I now know who to blame if I never qualify for the Canadian national biathlon team. After all it couldn't be my fault not knowing how to cross-country ski right?

The Air Venturi Biathlon Target is often on sale at Amazon...

Kind of in the same boat... As much as I enjoy cross-country skiing...
- I don't trust my skills with a $$ rifle on my back
- I don't think my hips could handle going-all-out-skating

But there's always "summer biathlon", my backyard version have us either run laps or do intervals on the rowing machine :D

Parker's targets are amazing. I have a few of them on the course at Grenville and they never malfunction.

Very nice target set up, for me though there will never be a more shootable target than a crumpled up diet Coke can. Mind you I do have several FT targets but those are harder to hit..lol.

I like that way of hanging spoons with the twisted handle and the hole. Less chance of hitting the cross rod when it's up so high above the target. The way I currently hang them, the spoon becomes a spinner when hit. Entertaining.
