I want to try the roller thingy. Is it proven that you need to have it bearing on an axle or would a simple soft roller lying flat on a bench work?

Whatever works, Duke. Don't be afraid to try everything/every method.
Resting the forend in different locations on the rest also can show change in group size
and location of the group as well.
None of my HW springers improved group sizing with the "artillery hold" oft times said to be necessary.
For those rifles, the centre of the forend resting on a small sand bag on the adjustable bench rest was
THE location, however, they also shot just about as well when griped with fingers cupped around the
forend's front such as Si Pittaway does when shooting from the rest in the Sandwell Field Sports indoor range.
I think as long as the rifle can recoil exactly the same each time, nirvana can be reached, however, springers
must be allowed to move.
