Hello everyone,

Nice to meet you all! I'm Yuan, an international student at the University of New Brunswick. I had six years of shooting experience before I came to Canada. I was in men 10m air pistol and 50m free pistol.

I am currently planning to buy a Morini, but I am not sure if I need to get the RPAL, as the average speed of this gun is 500fps (it is adjustable). I hope someone can kindly provide me with some information, because the latest PAL course that NB can sign up for is in November, and RPAL will be available after Christmas. The wait will be hard :(

Thank you very much!

As long as you are buying from a proper business they will not sell a PAL rated gun without a license so that should help keep you from committing a crime by mistake. If the gun you want is 500+fps then it is a firearm and you will need to get a PAL (Possession and Acquisition Licence) which requires that you take a firearms training course and pass a test. Hope that helps.

PS... don't buy a 500fps airgun from an individual as a way around it, not worth the legal risk. They are supposed to check your PAL as well.

Thank you, I signed up for the firearm safety course last night. The earliest available course in NB is November, and I expect to get RPAL in December.

I have never heard of anyone with a match pistol requiring an RPAL. If you buy from a Canadian distributor, such as Cibbles in Quebec or Nordic Marksman in the East, they will make sure the gun is shooting at the right velocity so no PAL is needed.

I am not trying to discourage you from getting your PAL or RPAL, but to just do it to own a 10M match pistol is probably unnecessary. If you intend to buy legitimate RPAL guns, then by all means get the licenses.

Thank you, that's a really useful tip. I contacted a dealer in Ottawa, he told me that RPAL is required. I'll ask some more dealers, thank you very much for your advice :D

Did the dealer you were talking to know that you were asking about air pistols? He may have made the assumption you were asking about powderburners.

Yes I did, I specifically emphasized the model and purpose, but the distributor also emphasized muzzle velocity and barrel length which belongs to the restricted firearm. But that's ok, I'm also looking to other distributors and professionals for answers.

Well, that doesn't make sens... why would anyone want a restricted 10m air pistol?

Save yourself the trouble, and buy a Steyr

Thanks, you're right. I contacted cibles target, they told me I didn't need PAL, but Morini was out of stock, so I bought Steyr Evo. I've been using Morini for six years but have never used Steyr, so this will be a new experience.

Welcome

You won't be dissappointed in the evo. Nice triggers on the Morini but the stock grips, just didn't work for me. The Steyr fit like a glove. Both are capable.

Thanks, you are definitely right. Steyr has the most comfortable grip. It only needs a tiny adjustment to fit in; it feels like "a glove," just like you said. But I have to use a lot of epoxy putty on the Morini grip to make it fits properly.

Yes absolutely, I'm also looking for free-pistol range and match in NB, and I have to get my PAL first. I'll be in touch!
