Isn't that last little cut bit unnecessary?
The way you have it oriented, it's only providing about 1mm of added length to the rod as the rod reaches in and touches the bottom of the cut/empty cartridge is it not?

Perhaps that little bit is needed to make it work, but I'm suspicious if it's necessary.
When you say finger tight to the last thread, do you mean fully closing the cap entirely, or does it the cap still sit out a bit from the tube when tightened with carts inside as per norm?

Also I believe Bob's advice to cut the cart in two places so it sits between 2nd/3rd carts would be 'safer' in the long-term.
By positioning your 2nd/3rd carts directly neck to neck, there's a chance it could put too much pressure and bend/damage the necks slightly - though it may be unlikely.

The cap was threaded down all the way finger tight, no treads left. It might work without the spacer, I'll likely try that next. I don't think the cap ends pressed together will be an issue. They are flat and the thin puncture section is not taking the load, it goes right into the strong casing material.
