Is there any reason why I should not shorten the fill rod on a 2260 so that I can carry a spare CO2 12g cartridge in the main tube?
Thanks.

Can't see any. If there's enough ''free'' space, why not? As long as the spare cart isn't damaged when screwing the end cap, I think you should be fine. Please let us know if you do it :) .

Actually, there is enough room for TWO spare CO2 cartridges, plus room to spare....

I would take an empty cartridge, and cut a tubular spacer out of the straight middle portion, then insert the two extra cartridges with the necks inside the spacer, facing each other, but not touching (to prevent damage to the thin ends).... A piece 1.5" long would be perfect.... Then drastically shorten the rod on the 2260 cap to the appropriate length.... If you cut the spacer exactly the right length, you might even be able to use a cap from a 2250 (maybe).... The bottom of the "middle" cartridge would face back, towards the bottom of the cartridge that is in use.... The bottom of the front cartridge would face forward, against the front cap/rod as usual.... All that is needed is to cut the spacer+rod the correct length so that when you tighten the front cap, the rearmost cartridge is pressed against the seal in the valve with the usual force.... 8)

Great suggestions, I was thinking that three might fit. I have to assemble the rest of the gun first. The last of the parts I've been waiting for just showed up about 2hrs ago. I'm building a 24" barrel 2240 using a 2260 tube so that I can go over 500fps, it seems silly to not gain anything other than the legal change by using the 2260 tube hence my thought of using it for storage.

I think my only reservation would be in regards to temperature.

I never shoot until completely dry, to discourage the capsule getting stuck to the pin.

A potential issue/something to keep in mind if storing the extra co2 this way, is that when degassing the gun the main tube tents to get quite cold - which I'm assuming would make the spare canister very cold as well. Shouldn't be an issue if you allow a few minutes for it to come back to ambient temp, but I would imagine immediately loading the spare capsule after degassing and then firing again right away could bring your velocity down to the lower end much quicker than if that same co2 canister had been kept externally (in a pocket, shell holder, etc.)

edit: also, I'd recommend ordering a spare 2260 rod if you're intending to attempt this for two reasons. Incase you make an error in the cut length, and also for even if you succeed flawlessly, it would mean you can never fire your 2260 without having 3 inserted carts (though you could bypass this by keeping 2 fully intact empty carts with you at all times to act as spacers if you're down to only one useable co2 cartridge) - unless you keep a spare 2260 rod on hand.

For the purpose of carrying one spare rather than 2, what do you think about using the end rounded portion of one used cartridge - permanently attached to the shortened rod so that there's a solid connection point between the rod and the used/cut piece that holds the spare. That way the currently pierced/in use cartridge and the spare can sit round end to round end against each other, and the neck of the spare inserts safely into the cut/used cartridge that's permanently attached to the rod instead? For some reason I feel like this would be more stable?

I placed three 12gram cartridges into a 2260 with the hammer and valve installed. I put the two extra cartridges nose to nose and with a 2250 tube cap/rod it seem to be withing ~2mm of being perfect. I think that if I could pull the rod out of the 2250 cap and place a 2mm spacer in before repressing the rod into the cap it would work.

Cutting the middle of a spent CO2 to about 1.5" long.... then adjusting the length as you go until the 2250 front cap fits properly.... would be a good way to go....

It is likely a 2mm flat spacer (like a washer without a hole) would likely fall crooked in between the necks of the spare cartridges, a tubular space can't do that....

Sorry, I mean putting a spacer inside of the hole in the cap that the fill rod is pressed into so that the rod can't seat quite as deeply into the cap thus making the rod ~2mm longer. However the rod seems to like being in the cap and I haven't managed to pull it out, instead I've ordered an extra 2260 fill rod (about $7) and I'll press it into the spare 2240 cap and trim to length.

I took the suggestion of cutting a used 12gram an used the lower third of it between the third/last cartridge (placed butt to butt) and then used a 2250B cap/fill rod to snug it together. Finger tight to the last thread, it seems to work perfectly, the gun fired at normal velocity and no gas leaks could be detected. I'm now leaving it to sit with the three cartridges in it and I'll keep and eye on how long it maintains a useful level of charge/see if it is leaking or not. I hope this works because the wasted space bugs me. Any chance someone makes a 12gram cartridge dimensioned pellet container? ;)

I just realized that I didn't use the cartridge as suggested, anyway the way I did it seem like it might be easier and functional. No measurement was made, the thickness of the cartridge base just happens to be what was needed. An accidental solution.

I'm likely going to be trying to sort something similar out for my 22xx/2260 tube build because the wasted space does seem unnecessary - regarding using one of the spare carts to store pellets/etc...

I have seen some 'refillable' 12g co2 cartridges that appear to screw open at the middle - kicking around ebay/amazon I believe? I assume you could use this to store pellets, a small bottle of lube, maybe even a small allen key with the L trimmed down. Then simply use it as a spacer in the tube. Keep in mind the heads on them seem slightly longer, so it may require trimming a touch more of the rod or empty spacer to fit right (but since you mentioned it going almost fully finger tight, the added few mm will likely not affect it much since the original cap/rod with 1 cart doesn't close all the way to begin with.

Those refillable cartridges look interesting.

The gun has sat over night and shows no sign of having leaked, still fires like it is on a new cartridge. When the cartridge does run out I'll post a photo of how I've laid out the parts to fit inside the 2260 tube.

Did some shooting with it today and it is not out of CO2 yet, I think this is a success barring something odd happening like me not being able to get the cartridges back out of the tube.

Looking forward to the layout photo!

You shouldn't have any issues removing the cartridges as long as you don't shoot it completely dry, and pellgunoil (or equivalent) the tip of every other co2 cart that you put in.

Not shooting the cart until it's completely gassed will make use of some of the extra co2 that leaks when you remove the plug slowly to help force the cart off the pin.
