Well, like the title says I fell victim to the never curing GE Silicone II... who knew?
https://www.homegardencompanion.com/hou ... k-warning/
If its TLDR, the Readers Digest version is: if the tube is expired, the silicone will never cure and it's true.
I laid down some of it a few days ago and it's as slippery as ... well silicone lube.
Tube expired in 2017.
Forewarned... :ANAL: :ANAL:

I did not know that, good to know. It might explain some previous experiences with the stuff.

I was always worried about it drying in the tube. Good thing to keep in the back if your mind for future projects

Yes, I was surprised. First clue was the tube felt oily like it had a bit of silicone oil on it. The second clue was that it didn't cure within 30 mins like it said on the tube, then after a day+ I googled it and sure enough found this useful tid bid - I notice GE is now selling Silicone 2 rather than Silicone II.. but it has the same issue, it's not an acid based cure and it won't cure if past the best before date. What a mess to clean up the silicone grease I have spread over the basement!

Thanks for posting this info. I got caught once with it not drying but didn't know why. Thankfully it was just a small project.

I learned this the hard way too during a washroom recaulk job. A simple recaulking turned into a messy cleanup and recaulking.

I also learned that only silicone 2 (or any other organo tin cured silicone) has that problem. If it's acetic acid cured like silicone 1, then mostly likely it will cure even well after expired. I'm sticking with silicone 1 for this reason.

I got caught today....

I checked mine which I remember I still used it once maybe one or two months ago and it cured... It's expire date was dued on 04/19...

It's about 3 hours already after I applied, and it's still sticky...

Anyway to cure it? Use a heat gun?? Give more time?

Thanks I just doing a test on my cat's new furniture, not an emergency repair... ImageImage

Just checked carefully again after reading this, and mine is 'Silcone II'... :(

What's other difference between the 1 and 2 besides this curing performance?

Not an expert and never known about it~

If it doesn't cure on its own then clean up with alcohol and use the good stuff. Likely, like me, you now have a tube of silicone grease. The silicone 1, smells like vinegar and is acid cure. The problem with silicone 1 is it not only stinks, but the acid is actually corrosive to many materials, like mild steel and marble. Hence, Silicone II and 2, and Advanced and a host of other marketing terms, that is not acid based and doesn't smell bad, and is non-corrosive to most materials. But the drawback is if it has expired it won't cure. And it seems some magic or mystery on "expired" date since a few months ago your 2019 expired silicone II still cured, but now...it's not so good. The label says it should be water ready in 30 min, so if it is now sticky maybe you'll get lucky. Mine stayed like grease after 30 min 3 hr, 24 hr, 48 hr... now like 3 days later it's still grease. So, if you are going the silicone II/2 route, suggest to do a test strip if it's past its best before date - otherwise cleanup is a PIA! So, do we save and use the expired Silicone II as dielectric grease or just throw out? I have 1/2 a tube left over!

My tube had about 1/5 something only, anyway, I thrown it to the recycle bin already....

And looks mine didn't turn into anything grease like, but just sticky like normal and never dried out...

I sealed 4 edges total, and used kitchen towel and warm water removed the stuff from one edge only and I will wait and see what happens tomorrow then...

Tried heat gun, couldn't do anything on it... Searched online, Google tells me remove and redo is the only choice...

Apparently silicone 2 is more mold resistant because of the organo tin in there. But in my experience they still mold after a year or so if you have poor drainage.
