I got tired of trying to get my old first gen Chrony to work indoors so I recently got a cheap Acetech AC5000 Chronograph. It literally fits in my pocket and seems to work very well as long as you can get the pellet through the very small aperture. I ct ompared it head to head with my Chrony and the readings seem to be very close (when the Chrony would read anything). For working on air guns in the basement and making quick velocity measurements as I make adjustments it is very handy. I've managed not to shoot it so far.

I have an AC6000 works great, uses blue tooth to connect to my phone. The only problem is I cannot find the data after I save it on my phone. I taped the clear liner in the tube, some times when the muzzle was too close it would blow out the end.

No wonder I found the 5000 is unavailable now... But the 6000 really interested me for the 18650 rechargeable battery and blue tooth App ability...

Just because the title says 'Cheap Chronograph' and because cheap is my stomping ground and finally because I need more posts to be able to PM:

Interesting and proved again math is a very important and essential skill ppl have to learn and master.... (I don't good at math... So I passed it ... [emoji38] )

I will stick to a true chronograph device... The 'soft' way is not going to give you a shot string to analysis or to see the minor fps difference between different pellets and I doubt it's suitable for the much weaker power airguns shooting just 10 yards to 20 yards when I saw his rifle on the table and talking about using the bullet drop height at 100 yards vs 300yards as an example....

My Chrony died. Chrony is now out of business. Too bad, I would have bought another one. I had no problems with it for many years. It just went dark after many 375H&H, .416 Rem, 458 Win, and other assorted boomers.
I gave it to my electrical engineer brother to see if it was just a disconnected wire. Probably a dead cpu if my usual luck holds.
You didn't get the last one of these.
I just ordered one. $75 beats $200 for a Caldwell.
Airgun mods are just "shooting in the dark" without a chrony. Bad pun. I'll see myself out...

yea...Nope. What the dude is doing in that video is calibrating his ballistic software to match his gun using Hornady loads. There are many assumptions and approximations he is making, density of air, ballistic coefficient etc to get the measured bullet drop to match what the software predicts. He may benefit from this procedure to hit targets further out with his setup, but he does not have an accurate measurement of the muzzle velocity of his rifle.

Update on my Chrony.
My luck is holding true. Cpu is dead.
I would imagine the shock wave of a bullet at mach 3 would wreak havoc on the cpu after many shots.
I rarely shoot my boomers anymore so the new chrony should suit me well.

My Chrony, a Beta Master model, died after about a year and a half; but the company was still in business so I sent it in for warranty repair and got it back a few weeks later and it has worked ever since, now it's about 10 yr old. They never said what was replaced, but my guess is one or both of the black boxes at either end.
There is no substitute for a good, accurate chronograph, regardless of the brand or technology. Don't rely on hocus pocus especially if you are intending to tune non-PAL guns, specially pistols.

I agree, Dukemeister. I think they call it Truing the Muzzle Velocity?

I did my degree in physics and my career in test and mearsurement equipement. Old man now. So, it's a bit tongue-in-cheek as YepYep picked up. Physics is good but there are so many variables you couldn't account for, as you described. At the very least, recoil would add a lot of error as the gun reacts immediately as the pellet is accelerated.

Still, for me on a budget, it gives me some ballpark numbers. Nothing that would stand up to the RCMP mind you. :)

I received my AC5000 chrony yesterday.
Works flawlessly, inside or outside.
Gives the same readings that my old Shooting Chrony did.
No light diffuser problems. Light source is internal.
1200fps limit is fast enough for my airguns.
Do I recommend? Definitely.

I have had two of these, both worked very well for air guns. Compared to 4 high end chronographs, but were equally accurate.

The first one didn't survive a dummy's Webley Senior pellet pistol shooting the outlet LED. (I deny all responsibility). The old Webley was purchased just after WW2 and still has enough power to smash and LED. LOL

I glued some inner tube onto the V channel to cushion the barrel, and slid PVC tubing over the U" bolt.

I've ch0ornographed everything from .22 RF's 1,080fps and CF .17's at up to 5,000fps, .375's at 2,840fps, .458's @ 2,500fps, .50's lower only 1,750fps, 12 bore slugs at 1,600fps, smokey ML's .32 only up to .69 and my Chrony Beta (remote reading box) is still working. Wonder if yours is just a "thing" that happens to electronics, sooner or later.
