thanks. you sent me off to learn about springs.

A spring is an elastic object that stores mechanical energy.

ergo.. a gas spring – (w/ a volume of compressed gas),
...or even a rubber band – (a tension spring where energy is stored by stretching the material) are indeed ... springs!

You can easily cut down a long piston, search the Forum if unsure.
All you need is hacksaw, drill, and file and patience.

Many years ago I chopped a B18 piston with a Dremel and one of those heavy-duty cut-off wheels. First I taped the piston where I wanted to cut and used a flexible piece of straight plastic to wrap around and draw the cutting line. Then cut a new notch for the sear engagement. The piston was an old 210mm from a Quest so I also had to extend the slot (using Dremel). Not too difficult at all.

is my propane tank a spring? a potential spring? or does it need a ram to be considered such?

You could toss it off the roof and see if it bounces.

Naw. Has to be a device that can be pressed or pull then returns to it's former shape.
