I always wondered why all Top straps were not made of alloy as in the case of the FAS which does not yield in OEM unmolested state, or when fully modified in a similar way to the original post here.

The early Webley Nemesis (single stroke) managed to keep costs competitive to the HW40 by employing alloy for the entire lower frame…..so it cannot be just a cost issue that you can have no metal in the gun, once you have established the tooling.
I still thought Webley had got things buttock about face with this layout (all the force being applied to the plastic top strap) but at least it was an effort to have some some semblance of metal in the gun, and giving it a better heft than its competitors.
Thinking aloud, maybe because the metal frame was of a cheap die casting, they realised it would not have taken the force like modern plastics might….leaving us with this flexing, but not cracking issue.

I concluded that FAS went the way of more expensive alloy, rather than die cast metal to get around this problem, but then passing on the extra cost to the customer.

One day maybe a manufacturer will offer a reasonably priced all alloy gun of this type, but sadly not so far they aint…

Hello Clarky!

I too wonder why top straps are not made stronger on these airguns. Just a stamped steel reinforcement along the underside of that part would help tremendously. Here, with the XP4, I suspect form took over function. There's much less actual material in the construction of the top strap, and combined with a ''slim'' design, it makes a fragile part. So far, I'd say the best power level for durability should be maxed to around 410-420 fps.

I'm glad you talk about the Nemesis, as I have one in .177, and it's one of my most cherished air handgun. I'd like to say that despite the plastic upper it's a solid gun. I wouldn't doubt it could make 425 fps and live long, with correct preparation and maintenance, that is :) . This fine gun just loves JSB RS Exact 7.33 grains domed pellets, but is not pellet picky and does well with quite a few other pells.

I post a picture of my three SSP pistols showing the top view. You can see the difference in the design of the top straps. Beeman P17 on left, Webley Nemesis in the center, Stoeger XP4 on the right. Look how thin is the critical front section of the XP4.

Cheers!

Hi buddy and fully agreeing with your comments.
The Nemesis I had was certainly robust like you say and if anything, had a slight edge in power over most of these models from stock. It was only beaten by the HW40s trigger function IMO.

The HW40/ P17/2004 variants seemed to have more popularity, possibly due to the novel exposed barrel/sudo receiver opening but i always felt the Nemesis handled better.

The FAS is fine…or can be made to be fine but too damn expensive for most..
