So I'm driving a rental car in BC, its licence pate sticker says October 2021.. I will have it into November. I tried finding out via Google if BC has a moratorium on sticker renewal like Ontario, but I can only find vague reference to a Bill introduced last year to eliminate plate stickers. Quick question, are sticker renewals still in place in BC?

Yes they are still in place here. If expired you can still get pulled over for no insurance and the vehicle can be towed.

Best call the rental company?

Definitely, if it expires wouldn't be good.

Here in Ontario you can run expired plates till end of November. You must have update tags then or face charges. And yes you will have to back pay them for the time you went without renewing tag. I believe the grace period was Federal. Did it because of Covid when most licence offices were closed or may have to close again. CHEERS!

We had a period of time you could renew by phone and wait for stickers… but that has passed. Everyone here now needs current stickers. All insurance agents have been open for some time.

Budget came out and put a new sticker on it last week. Problem solved.

So the best thing is to update each time you receive a notification.

BC won't be using stickers after May, 2022....

Not sure what you mean. Costs will be the same, just no sticker, since they can scan and detect out of date plates with the equipment they have.

In Ontario, Ford Gov has eliminated plate renewal fees and therefore stickers are now obsolete. We are supposed to even get refund for fees paid retroactive to march 2020, start of pandemic. Catch is we are expected to reelect him and his Government, thrn he can mske it back how he sees fit.

To coincide with the launch of online renewals and making car insurance more convenient, British Columbian drivers will no longer be required to display a decal on their licence plate. This change aligns BC with many other provinces in Canada that have already successfully eliminated the need for decals. After May 1, you can remove the decal from your licence plate (leaving it is also fine).

Renewals can also be done online after May 1, up to 44 days ahead of expiry date.... Renewals are now active if you have the "App", if not you can renew online or in person through a broker (eg. BCAA)....
