"Hope you’re keeping well!

Did you guys out on the left coast catch any word of the Toronto Police Service shooting to death our club gunsmith this Wednesday around noon?

Seems nobody but the small town local news has reported much of anything here in the GTA. They pretty much buried the story.

Rodger was 70, a tip top gunsmith, and a fine soft spoken gentleman. He was a friend of many and a friend of mine.

TPS was serving a “no knock” search warrant, and shot Rodger 4 times. He was in his shop with a customer when the cops bashed in the door and killed him.

The Toronto cops were 75 miles outside Toronto and hadn’t informed the local constabulary, the OPP….. they called them in to block off the country road after the fact. Rodger did a lot of work for the IPSC community as well as the local Norfolk OPP."

When I wore the uniform, only the RCMP had ANY jurisdiction outside their cities or postings, unless in hot pursuit out of that jurisdiction.
You can Google Rodger Kotanko for further write ups.

Not here, either, but several 'postings' on the web.

Copied from IPSC Ontario web site:

This is from one of Rodger's close friends..

“My friend was murdered on Nov 3rd.

This was my friend. He was 100% Legal in every aspect of the gunsmith firearms business. He stored everything properly. Norfolk County OPP were NOT even involved in this. This was Metro Toronto Police that decided to serve a search warrant. They came up to the house while Rodgers wife was unloading groceries from the car. They took her down to the ground by force with automatic rifles. They then proceeded to the garage where Rodger was sitting at his bench working on a gun. At this time a customer was with him seated a few feet away. The Toronto Police burst though the door shooting Rodger once in the neck and three times to the chest. He was dead for no reason. If you knew Rodger you know he was a calm person who could talk to anyone with common sense. He was a renowned Gunsmith who was known to be able to fix the unfixable. Norfolk police(OPP) knew him well and were some of his best customers for their own firearms. He was also on first name basis with the RCMP and OPP in Orillia (Where the CFO is.) If the Toronto police had notified the OPP, they would had gone with them and this would never have happened."

Met a young cop working in our small town. Told him you are lucky to be working in a small town and not in a big city. He said to me " I would rather be in a big city because up here everyone owns guns." This is what police collage is teaching them these days.

Yes it is, and it's been going on a lot longer than just recently. Seems those who join police forces who were shooters and hunters to start with
remain with those hobbies and become the snipers, ERT, etc. For a lot of those who do not shoot before joining, become the or more anti-gun and
become or want to be city-cops.

I’m heartbroken about this . Roger helped me in IPSC. (1991) training and did really nice work on my cz75 ipsc comp gun.
He also taught me how to do metal checkering and inspired me to get a lathe and learn how to make stuff.
He even sent me spare cz trigger springs years later after mine broke for Free even.
