I just got back to Ontario from my trip to BC. Was nice to see my family and curse the rain. This morning I got news my niece and her family were driving on Hwy 7 yesterday and were among the few swept of the road in the mudslide. 5 family members injured, 1 bad, but at least not killed. They were medivaced to hospital and are now stranded but at least taken care of. I hope Bob and all of you in BC take care and caution. Pandemic, fire and now flood are not easy to live with.

Thanks for the concern, guys, much appreciated.... 8)

We evacuated this morning to Princeton at 3:30 AM, but it was wayyyyyyyyyyy worse than Coalmont, so after it got light we came back home.... the water was slowly receding, but our house is an island, 3-6" of water on all sides, but the house was still dry.... just not very high!.... The flow rate at Vuich Creek station on the Tulameen river (about 2 hrs. upstream of here) peaked at midnight last night at over 4 times the flow rate of the last flood in Nov. 1995 (same situation, some snow, then warm and wet).... The dyke they built after 1995 mostly did the job, but the flooding breached the road to Tulameen at the west end of town, and we flooded from the side away from the river (go figure).... Here are some photos, taken this morning....

Like I said, an island!.... The Vuich Creek guage dropped 15% by noon today, but has rebounded and holding about 10% below last nights peak.... Hopefully they can/will repair the breach soon.... A lot of Coalmont residents evacuated to Tulameen, and the bridge between there and Coalmont washed out, so now they are stuck (along with all the residents of Tulameen) with no way out....

I'm glad we went east instead of west this morning, had we gone the other way we would be stuck in Tulameen.... Not everybody in Coalmont is as lucky as us....

That house is just one block closer to the river than we are....

Bob

Big change today.... You can still see standing water across the road on the lot diagonally opposite ours.... in fact most of that block is still flooded.... :(

Image

The water entered town by breaching the Kettle Valley Railway right of way upstream of the town (from left to right in the photo).... It was then able to flow across the road I was standing on to take that pic (which is lower to my right), and enter Coalmont from the backside, away from the river.... If the road was a metre higher for a distance of 100 metres, that would have been avoided....

Image

The river level is less than half it was at the peak, now we are just waiting for the runoff to soak into the ground and the water table to drop.... We are high and dry, amazing for what is apparently the worst flood since the "big one" in 1948.... 8)
