I get my wood supply in a somewhat unorthodox way, in the form of free furniture that people want gone. Most of it is pine/poplar or birch/maple but I picked up a very old piece (bed frame) that was rather dark stained/varnished. I think there are many species in this frame. Can you help identify what species this is? The wood came from the vertical edges of the headboard, the part that is slotted to take the side rail. The side rails themselves I think are birch, the mahogany was in the horizontal top and bottom of the headboard. It's going on the butt end of my shoulder stock, and under the pistol grip. Thanks if you can help.

It's VERY open grained, but I agree with Bob.

Well done Duke!
I do the same and regularly pick up wooden chairs or tables that people put out at the curb. I have made a few guitar hangers out of mystery wood. No two look the same.

Some of the great looking posts on this forum have inspired me to try make some more comfortable grips for two of my pistols.

Thanks for the inspiration!

The colour is sort of grey/purple so I am also leaning to walnut over mahogany-the other piece is more red-brown and I think it's mahogany. Anyhow thanks for the opinions.

Most black walnuts I have worked with have a "peppery" scent when freshly sanded or sawn, while mahogany does not.... Mahogany can be any colour from blond (I made a lot of furniture from light coloured mahogany when in highschool), through pinkish and various shades of reddish-brown to almost burgundy, but tend to have a straight, open grain.... The actual colour may not reproduce well in the photographs, I don't see any red.... but then I'm partially red-green colourblind, so WTF do I know!....

I don't see any red.

Bob

I think that's enough to confirm it; I did detect a smell when sanding and peppery describes it well. And no hint of red. So black walnut it is. :D :drinkers:

Yup I think you guys got it right. I thought it looked a bit brown reddish in the original pictures but the latest are telling.

Now THIS picture makes the screwed on piece looks like Purple Heart.

It's only got a tinge of purple, but i also considered that as a possibility. The actual colour is more grey than purple.
