Have you checked the size of the box, and compared cost at your post office?
- unless it fits in a small padded envelop, it will easily be $25-$30

Yeah, and the filled bubble envelope also need to be as thin as able to go through the measurement gauge to be identified as a letter... Otherwise 25$ up with tax, fuel sub charges etc included is almost the starting postage for parcels...

Like a main spring of a springer looks not able to go through that narrow hole for letters...

I just sent a box with a mould and some bullets cast in that mould about 9" x 7" and 6" tall to South-Central BC for $19.00.

I sent a scope about two weeks ago I think, double boxed, don't know exact size, all included I remember it's 31$, 32$ something, Ontario to Ontario, Expresspost. Around 5$ more than the normal parcel but included 100$ insurance and 2 days less ETA (3 days vs 5 days)... So I picked the faster choice...

I have used dozens of the Canada Post flat rate boxes and find them a great deal. The small box measures 10 3/8" x 14" x 2 1/8" and you can pack it with 5 kg of items. The box comes with $100 insurance. I've shipped 3 scopes in one of the small size boxes. Price is $20.90 with tax.

and with gas at $2/L, someone would need to be within walking distance of said shop and have free time to kill, to beat the shipping price quoted from the store.

That's what newspapers and flyers are for. I've even used pages from old phone books and income tax guides. One of my latest sales was a bunch of small sight parts that would fit into a pellet tin. I used a tiny box, placed it into the flat rate box and packed newspaper around it. That's a lot easier than trying to find a box and paying extra for the insurance. Flat rate boxes come with a label and you get a copy with the tracking number on it. I usually take a pic of the label and send it to the buyer right after I ship. I used over 30 of the small boxes during the last couple of months.
