Have an HW100 in .22 cal. Chopped 7" off the muzzle end of the barrel. Trued it up in my lathe and recrowned the muzzle. I lost the factory choke so was not sure what to expect, but the factory barrel was not as accurate as I wanted so what the heck .. forge ahead. Well, it is now a one hole tack driver and I only lost about 20 fps and the rifle looks much better with the shorter length .. and it lost 1/2 pound in the process.who woulda' thought, lol.

Heh, well you now have a HW100K, nice outcome. Post a pic with the karbine barrel. :drinkers:

Pic with shortened barrel. The walnut stock had a boring grain so I also did a camo paint job on it. If I get tired of the camo I still have a spare walnut stock on hand also. The rifle is tuned to shoot 15.9 JSB's at 18 foot pounds. It is easy to crank it higher but I'm liking the high shot count and lower report at 18 fpe. It takes down blackbirds and squirrels with no problem at this power level, and out to as far as I would normally shoot them ( 60 to 70 yards ).

Wow, yea it looks like it means business. With the muzzle brake installed it doesn't "look" like a carbine; it actually looks very well proportioned.

Well, Ron you are brave! Great outcome. Can you share how many shots do you get with a 200 bar fill? What reg setting did you use to get 18 fpe?

Thanks

Hi Tom,

Ya' know .. I cant remember what I set the reg at. It may still be at the factory 120 BAR. If I did reset it I would have probably made it 110 BAR. I'm bad at note keeping, lol. I also have an entire "spare" rear receiver that I can bolt on and with that it gives around 825 fps with the 24" barrel. It gave about 740 fps with the reduced hammer spring before I cut the barrel. So I lost about 10 fps. I was a bit surprised at the minimal velocity loss. The "spare" receiver comes off an HW100 "parts gun" that I bought that is complete except that it is missing the entire front receiver valve block. Don't know how someone misplaced or ruined that part. Anyway, it is the barrel off that parts gun that I shortened. I may be tuned to be shooting off the slope instead of the knee but it is working so I will leave it be. I completely degreased the hammer and so on so as to eliminate as much friction as possible. Helps with consistent shot strings. As far as shot count, I have not done a whole string but it looks like it is using around .8 BAR per shot while on reg. As far as consistency, and starting with a "cold" gun, I shot this string the other day with JSB 15.9's:

1. 726 fps
2. 724 fps
3. 733 fps
4. 728 fps
5. 733 fps
6. 731 fps
7. 728 fps
8. 731 fps
9. 731 fps
10. 733 fps
11. 731 fps

Not bad I think for an unchoked 16" barrel.

Ron

Hi Ron,

That is a great tune. However you achieve it. Accurate, powerful, air efficient.

I envy you!

Yeah, I hear ya .... I would not normally paint a walnut stock. But in this case it was quite a boring grain so I dove in head first, lol.

My somewhat limited experience with choked barrels has them wanting wad-cutters- at least the L/W choked bbls- R-10 Match or better.
By happy coincidence, they also like the heads on Predator style pellets.

Just so/so accuracy with domes- which I doubt the choked bbl was intended for, anyways.

Even a bland straight-grained walnut stock can look good- with the proper finish- the tried and true and time consuming BLO.
I don't like the idea of painting over walnut, but I'm a little old fashioned that way.
If you are happy with what you have done, more power to you.
