Someone gave me a book to read, bless their heart - I told them I don't read for entertainment but they insisted, "it's a very interesting book, and it's non-fiction, you'll like it!", so I accepted the gift, a loan really, I have to give it back at some point. That was back in early September, today I cracked it open and started reading. It's a book on the history and importance of Energy in developing and maintaining modern civilization. It's quite dry, and boring so I think I'm done reading; I'm on page 12 or so and its about 1000 pages long so I know I won't ever get through it, like I said it's boring as heck... sort of like this post....so far. Anyhow, there was a paragraph about energy units which got me to wondering "how much energy do I send down range, in a tangible sense?". You know we say a gun is making 12 fpe, or the Non PAL limit is less than 4.2 fpe or 5.7 J, some whopper PCPs are slinging lead at 30-40 fpe. How much energy is that? According to the book, 12 fpe is roughly equivalent to 4 calories. Fun fact is that on food packaging when the calorie content is listed, the real unit is kcalories (1000 calories) so your average slice of white bread contains 67 kcalories https://www.nutritionix.com/food/white-bread/1-slice . That translates to 17000 shots at 12 fpe in one slice of bread. Now that's food for thought!

Unfortunately, the source of the information wasn't mentioned. Box 1.3 shown above is from University of Manitoba professor Vaclav Smil's book Energy and Civilization: A History, on p.10.

I also put the book aside after beginning it, but not because of subject matter or writing style. I found the way it was organized was distracting, particularly the frequent use of "boxes" of information such as 1.3 throughout the text. While it is a fairly long book, it's about half the 1000 pages suggested above, and is certainly not a book intended for casual reading.

A lot of people don't read for entertainment, even good, exciting stuff. Like so many activities it requires practice and regular honing, without which advancement beyond school reading is frequently not possible.

That's a LOT of reading. Doesn't take long for the numbers & words to blur, yet I find most ballistics interesting.
