How about the HW77? Any reason to choose it over the 97 ?

A friend of mine just got a used HW77 laminate a couple of weeks ago. He's currently shooting it with the OEM iron sights but will mount a scope soon. He also has a William's aperture sight arriving so that's another option.

The HW77 is quite versatile. It shoots fine with the OEM iron sights. You can easily remove the rear sight and install optics. You can also use a rear aperture sight on the 11mm rail with the OEM post sight up front. Some guys use the William's, with or w/o target knobs, but you can get a fancier target style aperture sight as well. You can remove the HW77 front sight and install a tunnel with interchangeable inserts. The tunnel front with a Williams aperture sight would be a fun combo to try. Install a soft 650fps spring (.177cal) for a nice 10m basement rifle for winter shooting. When the snow melts you can switch out the spring for full power, mount a scope and head to the field target matches.

How difficult is swapping the spring on these?

Easy for a tinkering airgunner like you. Threaded end plug like HW35 and HW80... sliding chamber but that doesn't have to come out to swap spring.

Enough preload to need a compressor? That's something I've avoided acquiring.
However I have a craving for something with open sights.

Not normally, on the 97 according to the Irish fellow, hunters vermin.
He shows compressing the spring and screwing the rear section out and well as back in.
I strongly suggest you watch his videos.
That said, I haven't done one myself - haven't needed to and my HW97 in .177 is close to 11 years old & gone through
thousands and thousands of pellets. Just as accurate today, as it was after break-in. 1/10" 5-shot groups at 20yards.

Obviously there is another inch or more of preload in the HW77, which is interesting as I don't think it is more powerful.
It must have a smaller diameter main tube.

Apparently, current production 77/97 use the same mainspring and same 26mm piston seal. Old versions of each used the smaller 25mm seal.

Old tired mainsprings can be shorter than when first installed. A freshly installed spring will quickly take a set and lose length when uncompressed. Some aftermarket spring manufacturers can have different coil gaps that can make for a longer spring until it gets tired.

Yes indeed, they do take a "set".
