Hi, wondering if anyone has ever tried to use available and cheap torsion springs (also known or sold as gate springs) to replace the powerplant in a typical break barrel?

Availability and cost is the main driving factor for this idea as any home improvement center carries them, cheaply and within the dimensions for B18/B19 replacement compression spring.

Has anyone tried it? Any drawbacks other than spring ends modifications and some diligent filing?

Here's what i saw recently (somewhat, forgot about it for a couple months)

Thanks for any input!

It sounds like an interesting experiment. The OEM B18 spring is 36 coils of .122" wire with an ID of approx .495". A .118" wire also works well for a mild shooting B18. Last week I chopped and installed a .128" wire spring (from Hatsan) into a friend's B18 and it's shooting very well with good consistency and accuracy.

What's the wire thickness on the gate spring? Years ago, I remember guys using the Princess Auto machine gun springs in various airguns and they seemed to work fine.

An OEM Crosman full-power B18 spring is only around $14. You can get free shipping if you buy a few springs and some seals.

I have to say no to this one. The design is not suitable for a spring gun, look how the end coils are touching. As mentioned above, cheap airgun springs are available. I have bought some on aliexpress as well as other places, even our Forum stores, Sniper Dan, Archery fun, Canada Shooting supply etc sell springs for cheap that work well. Of course, spring for a kit and you're going to get better quality. But, a gate spring.. it's an unlikely longshot.

Seems to me, that gate spring is meant to work through a 90 degree bend, rather than a compression/expansion lengthwise stroke.
